Striiv launches $70 Play pedometer to track your athletics without fatiguing your iOS device

Striiv Play

Following the recent launch of its iOS fitness app which proclaimed "no hardware required," Striiv has just announced new hardware for it anyway: the Striiv Play smart pedometer. But unlike the app alone, it lets you set off on your fitness adventures without toting an iDevice by doing the "heavy lifting of tracking activities" with up to a week of battery autonomy, then syncing up with the app using Bluetooth 4.0 later. From there, you'll be able compete with friends on Facebook, gain bragging rights by reaching milestones, play games that let you progress by working out more, and chart weight, calories and exercise progress. We tested Striiv's standalone pedometer awhile back, noting that the "insidiously" addictive games were a great motivator, and the company claims that 60 percent of users lost 13 pounds or more. So, if the little voice in your head isn't enough to egg you on, you can grab it now for $70 -- the PR and video after the break will tell you the rest.

Halloween not a Treat for Pets! - The West Ranch Beacon

The Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC) would like to remind pet owners that although Halloween may be a fun holiday for humans, but it can be a potentially dangerous and frightening time for pets.? Here are a few tips to keep your pets safe this Halloween:

 1. Keep pets indoors in a secure, comfortable area with a radio or television playing in the background.? Many pets fear the noises of trick-or-treaters.
 2. Always keep current license and ID tags securely affixed pet your pet?s collar.? A license tag is the only voice a pet has if he or she becomes lost.
 3. Do not leave pets outside unattended.? Loud noises frighten pets and they may panic, become confused, and go through great lengths to escape their enclosures.
 4. Keep pets away from all candy. Chocolate, which contains theobromine, can be poisonous to pets, causing nerve damage and even death.
 5. Properly dispose of all candy wrappers.? Tinfoil and cellophane candy wrappers are tempting treats for pets and can cause pets to chose or to have intestinal blocks.
 6. Keep pumpkins or jack-o-lanterns away from pets.? Pets can easily knock them over, which could result in a burn.
 7. Halloween pet costumers can pose safety hazards for pets.? Do not dress your pet up unless he or she is used to it.? Make sure the costume does not restrict their movement, vision, hearing, or the ability to breathe or bark. Halloween pet costumes should not have small or dangling accessories that can be swallowed by your pet.
 8. Post the numbers of emergency clinics as well as the number of your local animal control agency on your refrigerator or another location where you can easily find them in case of an emergency.

If your pet does become lost, it is critical that you visit the animal shelters surrounding your area. Shelter staff and volunteers will also provide suggestions for finding lost pets. Be sure to bring a photograph of your missing pet to post at your local shelter.

For more information, contact your local animal shelter or visit our website http://animalcare.lacounty.gov.

Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) Eyeing Brazil Retailer's Online Biz ...

Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN)Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) was rumored earlier this year to be in the market for a prominent Brazilian retailer's e-commerce business, but those talks were downplayed and dismissed. However, it seems that at least one part of the rumor - that a Brazilian retailer was putting the e-commerce business on the market for sale - is now confirmed publicly. And there is little secret that Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) has expressed serious interest in getting into the Brazilian market, which as 200 million people and a potential $12 billion annual e-commerce market.

Could this be the time that the marriage happens, thanks to Saraiva?

Saraiva, a Brazilian retailer, has indicated interest in selling its online e-commerce business, with special focus on its e-books that have generated about $250,000 in revenue per year. Saraiva has much higher margins with its brick-and-mortar retail stores, so though Brazil is a burgeoning online marketplace despite limited Internet access (though getting better). Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) ?may likely see Saraiva's e-commerce unit as an opportunity to break into the regulated online market in Brazil, especially as it is looking to introduce its Kindle e-reader to the market in the coming weeks and months. With taxation, logistical and regulatory issues that are unique in Brazil, Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) could be well-served to break into the marketplace through an already existing e-commerce channel.

"Why would this be interesting for Amazon? Amazon's main challenge will initially be overcoming the obstacle of the?publishing companies. By buying Saraiva it shortens that distance dramatically," said an anonymous industry executive.

A second executive said, "(Saraiva's) assets in terms of relationships with publishers and distributors could be important for Amazon."

That might be true. Would the money to buy Saraiva's e-commerce portal be a better investment than Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) trying to develop its own organic presence? Have investors already accounted the prior rumor in the stock price, and how would this figure into the stock price moving forward should this deal go through? How might investors like billionaire fund manager Jim Chanos of Kynikos approach this news for the future fortunes of Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) as it moves into the growing South American market?

Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile Hunker Down For Hurricane Sandy, AT&T Is Like ?Whatevs?

sandyHurricane Sandy, what may essentially be the biggest storm to hit the North Eastern seaboard in history, is barreling toward us, through the Atlantic, at this very second. It's estimated to cause between $2.5 and $3 billion in wind damage alone, and has already claimed dozens of lives on its way to the States. To that extent, the nation's major wireless carriers want you to know they're ready to roll. Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile have all sent out press releases explaining that they're in full preparation mode for Sandy's arrival. AT&T has made no such announcement.

Language, Education, Technology - Learning Analytics

This topic comes from Week 4 of the MOOC on ?Current/Future of Higher Education?

USING ANALYTICS TO INTERVENE WITH UNDERPERFORMING COLLEGE STUDENTS (INNOVATIVE PRACTICE)?by John Fritz and Eric Kunnen

A talk available at?http://www.educause.edu/eli/events/eli-annual-meeting/2010/using-analytics-intervene-underperforming-college-students-innovative-practice:

 • LMSs do have some benefits, e.g. they keep track of students?
 • Reference to the ECAR study of 2005 with 5 stages of analytics use by schools

Purdue Experience

 • ?Signals? in Blackboard, an example of predictive ?approach of analytics
 • Success = academic preparation+performance+EFFORT, hence identifying measures of effort
 • CMS and other technologies (real time) => Prediction <= SIS Data (historic), Other data
 • Better student performance: more Bs and Cs, fewer Ds and Fs [apparently not much impact on B-students]

UMBC Experience

 • D students stay in Blackboard about 30-40%?consistently?less time than C-students
 • Students may draw faulty conclusions by drawing connections between their online presence and grades on specific assignments too directly
 • According to Fritz?s research, 28% students were surprised what the data showed about their performance
 • Overall, it looks like it?s not clear whether and how students use these data and what they do with them, and how they interpret them
 • At the institutional level, data help identify most active courses and best practice teachers
 • Frequency and duration of clicks are critical to consider not just number of clicks

Grand Rapids Community College: Project Astro Experience

 • Bb Building block for analytics available for installation free of charge[??]: Dashboard that shows visuals for tool use overall and by course, instructor vs. student activity, specific student activity, etc.
 • http://www.starfishsolutions.com?offers an alert system: possibility to raise a flag for specific students a) manually by the instructor or student counselling office or b) automatically by the system
 • More effort is needed to bring multiple systems, sources, and databases together to merge different kinds of data for decision making
 • FIRPA concerns about student privacy

PENETRATING THE FOG by Long and Siemens

 • A lot of decisions are not data driven
 • Learning (course- and department-specific level) vs. Academic (institutional, regional, national/international level) analytics
 • Interesting study cited by Morris, Finnegan and Wu about online presence and behavior of?undergraduate?students in online courses
 • important caution against taking a deterministic view of analytics as opposed to a more justified probabilistic view

OPEN LEARNING ANALYTICS: AN INTEGRATED & MODULARIZED PLATFORM PROPOSAL TO DESIGN, IMPLEMENT AND EVALUATE AN OPEN PLATFORM TO INTEGRATE HETEROGENEOUS LEARNING ANALYTICS TECHNIQUES by Siemens et al (2011)

 • This is a proposal for a ?abroad-based, multi-sourced, contextual and integrated? model of learning analytics (p. 6).
 • It pulls together a number of data sources to draw a more holistic picture of student learning and academic effectiveness at the course and institutional level.
 • This model also provides recommendations by outsourcing to external sites, e.g. Amazon, etc.

SOME KEY QUESTIONS FOR THE MOOC:?

 1. What analytics tools are available for Moodle?
 2. When is the proposed platform going to be ready?

An Aussie in New York _ Anthony Warlow in 'Annie'

NEW YORK (AP) ? At a restaurant one recent night, Anthony Warlow posed a rather strange question to some fans.

A couple from Atlanta who had just seen the new Broadway revival of "Annie" approached the Australian actor's table and complimented him on his skills as Daddy Warbucks.

Warlow smiled large. "That's great," he told them in his naturally singsongy Aussie accent. Then he pressed for more: "I know this is a funny thing to say, but did I sound like a New Yorker?"

"Oh, my God," said the husband, nodding to his wife. "She thought you were a native."

It was the answer Warlow desperately wanted to hear.

"I know I can sing, I know I can act and I can kind of dance, but the one thing I'm really wanting people to believe is that I'm a New Yorker when I'm on that stage," says the actor in his dressing room at the cavernous Palace Theatre. "I know that sounds silly to say, but it means a lot to me."

Warlow, known Down Under as the thinking man's musical theater guy, doesn't leave much to chance and even less uninvestigated. And making his Broadway debut at age 50, he wants every part of it just so.

His arrival is due in part to patience and some luck ? he had been angling for a role in "Rebecca," which later collapsed amid questions about its financial backing ? so he's savoring this time. "I'm overly flattered by being asked to come here and I'm still kind of living the dream," he says. "I've come in taking baby steps."

ORPHAN TIES

Those steps include lots of thinking about accents. Warlow has decided for this more naturalistic "Annie" that Warbucks has a flat mid-Atlantic accent but falls back to his Hell's Kitchen roots when stressed.

He's also imagines Warbucks as a former orphan. "The name gives it away ? Oliver," he says, smiling. That makes Warbucks bond even more with Little Orphan Annie, Warlow argues.

"I like to saturate with as much back story or history. My father used to say to me, 'Knowledge is power,'" he says. "I try to live the histories of these characters. It makes it so much easier because you're not thinking, 'I'm doing this, but I don't know why I'm doing this.'"

This isn't the first time Warlow has tackled the baldheaded billionaire ? it's his third. He first played him in 2000 and then again beginning in late 2011, both in Australia.

In fact, he was playing Warbucks when three-time Tony Award-winner James Lapine called late one night in Brisbane to offer him the job on Broadway. It was a unique audition since the two men had never met, although Lapine had watched a lot of YouTube videos of Warlow.

"I'd heard a lot about him over the years but I'd never seen him," says Lapine. "The word on him was so great, I just thought I'd take a flier on him and, boy, I'm glad I did because he is remarkable."

Warlow is as famous in Australia as he is unknown in America. He made his debut with the Australian Opera at 19 in Benjamin Britten's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and began an opera career with credits including "The Magic Flute" and "Tosca."

He jumped to musical theater in 1985 with the London National Theatre's production of "Guys and Dolls" and went on to sing roles in "The Secret Garden," ''Man of La Mancha" and "My Fair Lady." He also premiered a musical of "Doctor Zhivago" in 2011, though he blew out his hamstring on opening night. Ever a trooper, he returned three days later.

"Soccer players come back six weeks later," he says, proudly.

'DON'T TAUNT ME'

Over the years, he's taken about half a dozen trips to New York to gorge on theater, and although there has been interest in him coming over, nothing really came of it until now.

"I'm a realist. I get this stuff and I'm very flattered when it comes but I think, 'Guys, don't taunt me anymore.' We know the history of people from Australia getting into Broadway is very, very rare."

Warlow, who battled non-Hodgkins lymphoma in 1992, is perhaps best known for playing the masked lead in "The Phantom of the Opera," a role he's done twice ? in 1990 and 2007-2009. He chose to tackle it a second time because his daughter ? now 18 ? wasn't born when he first played it. "For one night, she saw it," he says, laughing. "I carried on for two years after that."

Multiple parts are a theme in Warlow's career ? besides three Warbucks and two Phantoms, he's also played Henry Higgins three times and two Papagenos in "The Magic Flute."

"How many artists get a chance to revisit?" he asks. "The reason for it mainly is because I started very young. I was very good at makeup in those days or had to be."

His star turn in "Annie" might not have happened. While mulling over whether to play Warbucks, he also was considering the lead in "Rebecca," but ultimately pulled out after considering himself too old. While in America, he learned of the show's embarrassing collapse, due to alleged fraud that involved fictitious investors and a faked death.

Asked if he feels relief that he didn't jump on that horse, Warlow nods. "A little bit of that, yeah. At the same time I'm sorry that it didn't work out. The more the merrier for me."

These days, he's just soaking up Broadway. At the Palace Theatre, he's learned about the stars who preceded him, such as Judy Garland and Josephine Baker, and he's learned that the elevator to his dressing room was built specifically for Sarah Bernhardt. That appeals to his sense of history.

"I'm like a kid in a candy store," he says.

Home Improvement Ideas From the Seattle Home Show - Clayton ...

We recently attended the Seattle Home Show to get the latest home improvement trends and ideas to inspire your home improvement projects. If creating your dream home is still a work in progress, here are some ideas we picked up from the show.

LED Lighting

While 75 percent of American consumers have opted for CFL or compact florescent bulbs, LED, which stands for light-emitting diode lighting, is becoming more popular as the price becomes more reasonable.

LED lighting is more energy efficient, lasts longer than traditional incandescent bulbs, and is even slightly more efficient than CFL lighting. A recent study by Consumer Reports recommended LED lights over CFLs because LEDs are mercury-free, brighten instantly and offer superior light quality. Even at $25 per bulb, LED lighting can save consumers about $130 over their 23-year lifespan while CFL bulbs save $60 over incandescent light bulbs.

With its increased popularity more decorative LED lighting fixtures have become available, some of which were on display at the home show. In addition to being energy efficient, some LED lights have the added benefit of being able to change color to match a room?s d?cor. With an array of fixture designs, many of which look as good as or better than incandescent, LED lighting might be a money-saving option for a home improvement lighting project.

Outdoor Living Spaces

At the home show we heard over and over how outdoor living is becoming an increasingly popular trend for homeowners. Many homeowners now see their backyard as an extension of their house.

In cities like Seattle where the rainy days often outnumber the sunny, it is more difficult to take advantage of outdoor living spaces. Many of the home show ideas for creating outdoor living spaces in the Seattle area included building covered patios in order to take advantage of outdoor space year-round. The coverings ranged from as simple as an awning to an extension off the house or independent gazebo. A personal favorite idea was to include an outdoor fireplace and heater to make the outdoor space comfortable year-round.

Updating Master Bath

For homeowners looking to remodel, but who don?t have the budget to conquer the whole house, the master bathroom is a place to start. We learned that many homeowners are forgoing large remodeling projects in favor of upgrades to key areas. The most popular room to upgrade is the master bathroom. Many homeowners are looking to bring the spa home and make their en suite bathroom into a retreat. The home show had all sorts of ideas to make you drool: fixtures and materials to turn the bathroom into a high-tech spa, including an automated toilet/bidet with touch screen. If you don?t have the budget for a major overhaul, small changes like updating tile or fixtures can help give an upgraded look without the upgraded costs.

(AP) ? The leader of al-Qaida has urged Muslims to kidnap Westerners to exchange for imprisoned jihadists, including a blind cleric serving a life sentence in the United States for a 1993 plot to blow up New York City landmarks.

In an undated two-hour videotape posted this week on militant forums, the Egyptian-born jihadist Ayman al-Zawahri also urged support for Syria's uprising and called for the implementation of Islamic Shariah law in Egypt.

He said that abducting nationals of "countries waging wars on Muslims" is the only way to free "our captives, and Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman," the Egyptian cleric.

"This is the only language which they understand," said al-Zawahri, appearing in his customary white turban and robe. "We will keep on seizing more ... until we free our captives."

There was little clue to his whereabouts from the video, shot against a backdrop of brown curtains.

He periodically releases video and audio statements. Two weeks ago, an audio recording by him urged holy war over an amateur anti-Islam film produced in the United States. He released a video on this year's anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, claiming that his warriors "defeated America in Iraq".

Freeing Abdel-Rahman has become a rallying cause for Islamic militants and jihadists. A group named after him has claimed responsibility before for a June assault on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, which caused no casualties. It caused no casualties, but a bigger attack on Sept. 11 claimed lives of four Americans including the U.S. Ambassador in Libya Chris Stevens.

Relatives and supporters of Abdel-Rahman have been holding a sit-in next to the U.S. Embassy in Cairo for months. Egypt's new Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, under pressure from leading Egyptian jihadists recently released from prison, vowed to push for his release.

Al-Zawahri appeared to be following Egypt's debates over the country's political future, as he called upon ultraconservative clerics in Egypt to ensure clear mention of Islamic Shariah law in the new constitution. Members of Egypt's Salafi trend have been pushing the Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamist group from which Morsi hails, to make the role of Shariah explicit. Liberals fear that the Islamist groups will insert language that can be used to curb freedom of expression and the rights of women and minorities.

"Shariah must be the source of legislation ... This must be stated," Zawahri said. "This is the first step to cleanse the constitution and laws in order to implement Islamic Shariah law."

Egypt's old constitution and most drafts of the new one would include some reference to "Shariah" or the "principles" of Shariah, but the exact phrasing could have a major effect on future court rulings on the constitutionality of laws.

Al-Qaida leader also called on Muslims, especially in countries bordering Syria, to support the uprising there.

"I urge Muslims everywhere ... to rise up to support the brothers in Syria ... to get rid of the cancerous criminal regime," he said. "Syrian people have the right to defend themselves with all means."

The transformation of Syria's uprising into an open war has given an opportunity to foreign fighters and extremists to play a larger role in the uprising, analysts say. President Bashar Assad's regime has long blamed foreign "terrorists" for the country's crisis.

Al-Zawahri accused international community of indirectly approving the killing of Syrians.

"The international community ... is giving Assad a license to kill and one chance after the other to curb the Syrian revolution," he said. "They are afraid of a government that seeks victory for Islam and Muslims."

Syria's most Sunni rebels have received support from fellow Sunnis in the Gulf, while Assad's regime, dominated by a Shiite offshoot sect, is allied with Shiite-led Iran.

Our Adventures in Home Improvement: Beadboard Cabinet Redo

I found this skinny cabinet at a garage sale a few weeks ago.? I was looking for something for my son's college apartment. It?was the?right size, but the more I thought of it, it was not the right piece for a college guy.?? I decided to get him something else and would keep this for myself.

I wasn't thrilled with the color, but loved the cabinet itself.? ?

I like the patina of the wood shelves inside, so decided to leave them.?

Easy enough to change what I didn't like....

I painted several coats of white on it??

I then distressed it with sanding blocks and an electric sander.?

I?added old blue canning jars and the old can of?seed packets?on the top.?

I'm not sure where I'm going to put it long-term, but here it is in the entry for now.?

Pinterest-Like Facebook Collections Test - Business Insider

A small hiccup for Facebook's latest attempt at weaving e-commerce into its site.

Collections, a feature which let Facebook users place items that interested them in visual lists, similar to a service provided by Pinterest, has temporarily shut down, Josh Constine reports at TechCrunch.

A small number of businesses got to add "Collect" or "Want" buttons to items on their Facebook pages, allowing users to add them to collections displayed on their profiles.

Now that feature is gone?a temporary "pause" in the initial test, Facebook tells Constine.

While the feature is gone now, it's coming back in both Web and mobile forms.?

E-commerce is the next big frontier for Facebook. It's experimenting with cajoling users into sending their friends gifts on birthdays and other big life occasions, but that doesn't seem like it will move the needle on revenues. Facebook needs to get into everyday commerce, and it needs to run tests like this.

There's another, uglier reason for Facebook to toy with a feature like this, though. Pinterest has hired a number of senior Facebook executives, including Tim Kendall, who directed Facebook's monetization programs. Launching a product that Facebook executives surely knew would be viewed as a "Pinterest killer" is a way of keeping their former colleagues watching their backs.

Before you scoff at this theory, look at Facebook Questions, a feature which closely mimicked Quora, a startup launched by two former top Facebook engineers. That feature failed to gain traction and got shut down?for good.

Update: Facebook now says it plans to revive the feature after an initial test. We've updated the story to reflect this.

The unification of Mr. Netanyahu's Likud party with Avigdor Lieberman's Yisrael Beytenu (Israel is Our Home) party ahead of January elections has the potential to pull Likud further to the right, alienating potential voters or ? if the alliance proves victorious ? lending credibility to Mr. Lieberman's agenda.

At a press conference tonight, the two leaders vowed that the new alliance would give Israel the experience, strength, and unity needed to face ?immense challenges,? not least of all Iran?s nuclear program.

?This is the time to project strength toward our enemies and unity within ourselves,? said Netanyahu, standing side by side Lieberman in nearly identical dress, with blue ties that matched the sea of Israeli flags behind them.?

?Unification will give us the power to defend Israel. The power to defend against foreign security threats and the power to enact social and economic change within the country,? said Netanyahu, whose administration was rocked by massive social protests last year. "We will ask the public to mandate us to powerfully lead Israel in the coming years.??

What kind of alliance??

Netanyahu and Lieberman gave few clues as to what sort of coalition they might build, which they will almost certainly need to do. Even together they are not expected to win a majority of the Israeli parliament?s 120 seats, but with an estimated 50 seats between them they will have greater leverage over small parties who demand political favors in exchange for joining the ruling coalition.

Some Likud officials have already scoffed at the alliance. One unnamed ?senior? official was quoted by the liberal Haaretz paper as saying ?we're repulsed by this partnership with Lieberman. I don't want to run with a person like Lieberman, with the kind of values he stands for.?

Lieberman has in the past advocated legislation seen as discriminatory toward Israel?s 20 percent Arab minority, including a bill that would have required all potential citizens to swear an oath of loyalty to Israel as a ?Jewish and democratic? state.

The DMA makes what director Maxwell Anderson calls 'a major ...

The painting Stream in the Mountains, by George Inness

Maxwell Anderson, the new director of the Dallas Museum of Art, calls it ?a major discovery.?

The DMA announced Friday that a work of art received in a 1931 bequest has been ?reattributed.?

The museum now believes that the piece being called Stream in the Mountains is by George Inness, whom the DMA described as ?one of America?s greatest landscape painters.?

The work has lingered in the museum?s collection for 80 years, having come to Dallas in the throes of the Great Depression as part of a bequest by Cecil A. Keating.

At the time the piece was given to the DMA, the unsigned work carried the title of In the Woods and was, officials say, ?believed to be by the hand of Asher B. Durand, a leading figure of the first generation of the Hudson River school painters in the mid-19th century.?

The DMA adds the following:

?At some point during the next 40 years, doubts as to the authorship of the painting were raised and the attribution was downgraded to possibly being by Durand, which held until August of this year.?

Sue Canterbury, the DMA?s associate curator of American art, ?viewed the painting in the museum?s art storage area and was intrigued by its strong composition and competent execution, as well as by the questions surrounding its authorship. After an examination of the spatial organization and the techniques used in the painting, a number of artists, including Durand, were eliminated as possible creators of the work.

?Close scrutiny of the early works of Inness yielded the greatest degree of parity in matters of execution.Canterbury?s suspicions of Inness?s authorship were clinched, however, when she suddenly came across a pen and ink drawing from the Princeton University Art Museum that contained the key compositional elements of the Dallas work. Of these similarities, the most eye-catching is the pointing trapezoidal rock that appears in the center of both drawing and painting.?

Canterbury followed up by contacting Michael Quick, former curator of American art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and author of George Inness: A Catalogue Raisonn?, published in 2007. Quick, the DMA release says, ?analyzed high-resolution images of the work and confirmed it as an autograph work by the artist. He also ?ascertained its date of execution to be approximately 1850, when the artist painted many Berkshire landscapes?a time just prior to his first trip to Europe. Quick further noted that the size and quality of the painting, as well as the small number of works known from this early period, underscore the importance of this discovery. Since the former title,?In the Woods,?was probably not given by the artist, the new title of?Stream in the Mountains?has been assigned to the work to more closely reflect stylistically the titles assigned by Inness at this period of his career.

?The confirmation that?Stream in the Mountains?is by the influential American landscape painter George Inness is a major discovery, and this exciting moment underscores the Museum?s focus on curatorial research in support of our mission,? said Maxwell L. Anderson, The Eugene McDermott Director of the Dallas Museum of Art. ?This magnificent early work by Inness joins four additional paintings in the DMA?s collection that stem from the artist?s late career and, thus, will allow us to present visitors with a fuller understanding of the stylistic development of this superb American painter.?

Stream in the Mountains?is on view in the DMA?s American Art galleries on Level 4, museum officials say, ?alongside Asher B. Durand?s?Wooded Landscape,?which is presently on loan to the DMA from the Jean and Graham Devoe Williford Charitable Trust.?

Strategy Analytics claims Android reached 41 percent of tablets in Q3, iPad may have felt the heat

Strategy Analytics claims Android is up to 41 percent of tablets in Q3, iPad may feel the heat

Three months can make all the difference, at least if you're drafting estimates at Strategy Analytics. Now that we know 14 million iPads shipped in the third quarter, the analyst group believes that Apple's tablet market share dropped from 68.3 percent in the spring to 56.7 percent in the summer. All of the shift is attributed to Android -- researchers think that shipments of Google-based tablets surged from 7.3 million to 10.2 million, handing the platform 41 percent of an increasingly crowded space. It's the "collective weight" of so many Android-reliant companies leaping into the market rather than any one of them pulling ahead, Strategy Analytics says. We wouldn't be shocked if a few Kindle Fire HD sales played a part.

More than a few wildcards still surround the figures and their long-term impact. First is that these are estimates, not concrete results: companies like Amazon steadfastly refuse to provide shipment numbers and leave most of the final tally beyond Apple to educated guesswork. It's also an understatement to say that the market will change dramatically before 2012 is over. Between Windows 8's launch, possible Nexus 7 upgrades and two new iPads, there are a lot of pieces moving on the chessboard.

After decades behind bamboo curtain, Laos to join WTO

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Isolated for decades, impoverished and landlocked, Laos is not an obvious choice for investors.

But the Communist country of 6.4 million people hopes to change that with its expected entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) on Friday, capping years of steady reforms aimed at building a modern economy and tapping a Southeast Asian boom as global manufacturers hunt for lower-cost alternatives to China.

"Laos now seems to be genuinely competitive, unlike before," said Hal Hill, a professor at Australian National University who specialises in Southeast Asian economies.

After 15 years of talks, the 157-member, Geneva-based world trade body is expected to confirm Laos as a member on Friday. Laos' parliament expects ratification by 2013, touting the move as crucial for reducing one of Asia's worst poverty rates.

The transition, however, looks difficult. Reducing red tape and enforcing pro-business regulations are proving more formidable for the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP) than crushing political dissent and chasing anti-communist rebels during nearly four decades of authoritarian, single-party rule.

In one imminent test case, Macau-based casino operator Sanum Investments Ltd has started international arbitration proceedings after the government took away its 60 percent stake in the Thanaleng Slot Machine Club in the Lao capital, Vientiane.

Sanum President Jody Jordahl says his Lao partners conspired with "extremely well-connected people" to take control of the club when it started to generate good profits. Sanum could also be stripped of its stake in casino Savan Vegas for failing to pay $23 million in taxes that Jordahl said were not part of their agreement. Sanum executives face jail.

"They have regulations but no intention to follow them. If this is how they'll treat foreign investors, then they're not ready to be integrated into the global economy," Jordahl said.

Officials in Laos did not respond to interview requests.

Thanks to a mining and hydro-power boom, Laos is already one of Asia's fastest growing economies, expanding 7.9 percent this year with double-digit growth in exports and imports, according to the Asian Development Bank. Japanese cars and sport utility vehicles clog the streets of once-sleepy Vientiane.

According to the WTO, more than 90 laws and regulations have been enacted and amended to meet the requirements of the global trade group in a spasm of reform that has also seen the opening of a stock exchange in 2011 and plans to host an Asia-Europe Meeting summit next month.

"RESOURCE-DRIVEN ECONOMY"

Some view Laos' accession to the WTO as mostly symbolic. It agreed to maximum import tariffs on goods averaging 18.8 percent, limits on agriculture subsidies and market-access pledges in 10 industries. Still, Hill says the WTO entry could help reformers push their agenda.

"Sometimes reformers at home find it easier to get reform through by joining regional or international associations. It puts a bit of check on more protectionist pressures like large state enterprise," he said.

Laos could also learn from its bigger communist neighbor, Vietnam, whose entry to the WTO in 2007 supercharged exports and accelerated its transformation into one of Asia's fastest-growing economies. Reforms in the country of 89 million people have since stalled as banks contend with crippling bad debts.

Like Vietnam, Laos began opening its socialist economy in 1986.

Laos already enjoys trade privileges from most Western markets, China and the 10-state Association of Southeast Asian Nations, of which Laos is a member and which takes 70 percent of its $2.2 billion annual exports.

"Much of what's exported from Laos is minerals, basic commodities, electricity exports from hydro-electric dams to the region," said Ken Stevens, managing partner at frontier investors Leopard Capital. "I expect more of the same - a resource-driven economy."

But manufacturing is on the rise. Since 1990, manufacturing has averaged 12 percent annual growth, ratcheting up its share of gross domestic product to 20 percent, according to a 2010 Australian National University (ANU) paper. Food and beverages account for three-quarters and garments are the single biggest manufactured export.

"For a tiny economy like Laos, garment manufacturing really is quite important," said Hill, author of the ANU study. "It signifies the country can compete in 'footloose' exports - where they are able to compete on the basis of being genuinely competitive rather than state-supported."

Obama is first president to vote early - after showing his photo ID

CHICAGO (Reuters) - President Barack Obama cast his ballot for the November 6 election on Thursday in his hometown of Chicago and encouraged others who could vote before Election Day to follow his example.

Obama, who was a U.S. senator from Illinois and had before becoming president, went to an early-voting facility to show his driver's license before making his pick for president.

"I'm just glad I renewed my driver's license," the president said after a poll worker asked to see his photo ID. When he handed it over, she studied it closely.

"For all of you who have not yet voted early, I just want everybody to see what an incredibly efficient process this was," he said to journalists afterward.

It was the first time a U.S. president had cast his vote early. Scenes of presidential candidates and their spouses voting on Election Day are typically a ritual that ends a long campaign season.

First lady Michelle Obama has already cast her vote. The president has said, with mock relief, that she voted for him.

Both Obama and Republican rival Mitt Romney are stressing early voting more than ever, encouraging their backers to take advantage of opportunities in many states as a means of increasing turnout.

But Obama's team says statistics show he is benefiting the most from early turnout.

Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the campaign's early-voting margins were ahead of where they were in 2008 and beating Romney. The president was winning the early vote in the battleground states of Iowa, Ohio and Wisconsin, and had a 15- to 35-point lead among those who have already cast their votes.

"This is a major part of our on-the-ground program and focus, and we hope that having the president do this today will send a message to people across the country, in states where early vote is an option, that this is something they should do, too," Psaki told reporters on Air Force One.

"He has a busy life; many American people have busy lives - picking up their kids, taking their kids to soccer, working double shifts. And this is a great option to participate in the process," she added.

Obama's stop in Illinois - which he is expected to win easily - was part of a two-day, eight-state marathon campaign trip that included Iowa, Colorado, California, Nevada, Florida, Virginia and Ohio. The president encouraged people at rallies throughout the trip to vote early if they could.

Motherhood Moment: Parenting Pointers: Protecting Kids Through ...

A new school year causes many parents to renew focus on the well-being of their children, particularly those seeing their kids leave for college for the first time.

?

During a conference call with clients, John O. McManus (top AV-rated trusts & estates attorney and founding principal of Tri-State-Area-based McManus & Associates) offered valuable insight on potential circumstances to anticipate and plan for with loved ones ranging from young children to young adults. Speaking from experience working with prosperous and successful clients across generations for more than two decades, he explains the importance of putting in place protections including a Power of Attorney and Health Care Proxy.

?

Below find his top 10 planning issues for recently emancipated children (over 18) and minors.

?

1.????? Legal and medical risks for children upon reaching age 18, legal adulthood.? What happens if they are in a car accident or are hospitalized?? How can we access medical and school records?

???????? Once your children are legal adults, you are no longer able to automatically make medical decisions on their behalf, access their medical records, or take any other action for their benefit if they are unable to do so.

???????? Additionally, parents will not have automatic access to their child?s financial accounts if they are over the age of 18.

???????? Adult children must consider completing a Health Care Proxy, Durable Power of Attorney, and an Authorization for Release of Protected Health Information to provide their parents with the authority to act with respect to their medical, legal, and financial needs if they are incapacitated or otherwise unable to handle their own affairs.

?

2.????? Overseas travel and study abroad.? What are the necessities when your child is overseas?

???????? If your child is away from home in college or out of the country on a semester abroad expedient access to the child?s medical and financial records can become even more critical in a moment of urgent need

???????? Colleges will not release a student?s medical records, even to parents, if the student is over the age of 18. This may be extremely detrimental to a child?s well-being in a physical or emotional medical emergency. Advance planning can facilitate communication between the foreign hospitals and parents.

3.????? Upon reaching age 18, does your child require a will?

???????? We believe that broadly the answer is no. Most young adults do not possess assets sufficient to merit the use of a Last Will and Testament.

???????? However, if larger accounts have been inherited by an adult child or if the adult child owns shares in a family business, a Last Will and Testament may be a critical component in the family?s overall estate plan to avoid unintentional beneficiaries and estate tax implications.

???????? The will should provide direction for a power of appointment to allow your child to appoint trust assets to descendants and/or a spouse.

4.????? Your child is an adult.? Should you appoint him or her as your representative in your incapacity planning?

???????? Adult children may be the best choice to name as fiduciaries to make the parents? medical and/or financial decisions.

???????? They may be appointed in the documents to serve at a future date when a certain age is reached, such as 25.

???????? Your child can be included in the documents at a younger age (as a teenager, for example), with authority to act at the age determined to be best (25, for example).

?

5.????? Your child is an adult.? Should you make outright gifts to them?? What are the risks of these gifts and custodial accounts?

???????? Outright gifts to adult children should not exceed a certain amount as outright gifts are exposed to attack and may deter your child from making his or her own way in the world.

???????? Presently, $13,000 from each parent or grandparent can be transferred on an annual basis to each child and grandchild. Additionally, up to $5.0M can be transferred gift tax free to children and grandchildren.

???????? A better way to make larger gifts to children is in lifetime trusts that will protect the assets against any unintended diversions or reversals (i.e. divorce, law suits, creditors, etc.) that a child may encounter, while still providing for the child?s needs and allow the child to maintain a certain quality of life.

???????? We often recommend that a child serve as co-trustee at age 30 and sole trustee at age 40.

?

6.????? Your 25-year-old (or younger) child is getting married.? Should you review with them whether a prenuptial agreement is necessary to protect the family assets?

???????? Having the discussion about a prenuptial agreement can be beneficial for both the parents and child who is about to be married. Clear financial foresight in advance of a wedding can be helpful to planning for a successful marriage.

???????? Certain assets, which are intended to stay within the family, can be protected.

???????? Significant work has been put into creating trusts for your children so that there is little risk of diversion, but a child can empty the trusts. Children should be well versed in the overall strategy to invest the assets in trust instead.

?

 1. Your child is under 18.? What are the medical risks if you are unavailable?

???????? In the event that the parents or guardians are unavailable and minor children require medical care, a hospital or doctor's office will reject the treatment that the child needs, unless there is a clear risk of death.

???????? In the past, care providers have been sued for wrongly treating children without the consent of the parents and now mandate formal written permission from a child's parents if they are not present or cannot be contacted.

???????? Someone local should be appointed to assist in getting your child admitted to the hospital.

???????? In order to assure that minor children are treated properly and immediately, their Health Care Proxy and Authorization for Release of Protected Health Information will name representatives who will be able to (i) receive their critical medical information; and (ii) make medical decisions for them if the parents are unable to do so.

???????? A set of the documents should be kept at the house, in a place that is easily accessible such as inside the kitchen cabinet door.

?

8.????? Your child is under 18.? What if both parents pass away or become incapacitated?? What must a comprehensive plan to protect this child address in addition to appointing guardians?

???????? The Wills we prepare provide comprehensive directions for the guardians that outline expectations and wishes for the minor child's upbringing.

???????? These instructions may include an advisory group to assist the guardians in making decisions and understanding the parents? objectives and guidance regarding priorities for education, medical treatment, household support, and other important considerations.

???????? A family mission statement will assist with direction for your children and may be critical if a child has special needs.

?

9.????? Passports for children. What is the relevance of children of foreign nationality having a passport in the foreign jurisdiction? If your children are foreign born or going overseas, are passports current in the event of an emergency??

???????? Always the best course of action will be to keep children?s passports current. Even expedited passports can take weeks to process. In the event of an emergency, it is critical that all children?s passports are current.

???????? Without a legal guardian, a child will not be given a passport. A third party must be authorized in the absence of a legal guardian. This may be expedited by a signed and notarized document prepared by parents appointing this individual.

???????? If children of foreign nationality living in the US must move abroad to live with the guardian named in the will, having a passport from the same country as the guardian can speed up the departure process since there will be no need to wait for a visa approval.

???????? Finally, most airlines have policies regarding accompaniment of a minor for air travel.

?

10.?? Your child is under 18 and your selected guardians reside overseas. What are the risks to getting them ?home??

???????? NY will not appoint a non-US citizen guardian and will require a local co-guardian who can assist in moving the child abroad.

???????? A foreign guardian can serve alone in NJ, CT, or FL; however, the courts will look at the best interest of a child and may request that a local co-guardian be named.

???????? NJ will send paperwork for guardianship to the Embassy or Consulate office in the country where the named guardian resides. The testamentary guardian will have to sign the papers at the Embassy, and sole guardianship may be granted.

???????? Additionally, a Last Will and Testament should name temporary guardians in the United States. The temporary guardians assist in the process of transferring the children overseas to be united with the appointed guardians. A temporary guardian can also be critical if the child is an infant or requires other forms of immediate care.

???????? In order for the child to live abroad long-term, he or she will need to apply for a visa to the country of destination. Visa applications can require health screenings, background checks, and other time-consuming tasks that delay the child?s departure from the U.S. If the guardian named in the will cannot make it to the U.S. to take custody, a temporary local guardian can help navigate this process.

Trap for the unwary: Children in the U.S. with a green card are only permitted to leave the country for a period of one year before needing to reapply for re-entry to America. After a two-year period, the green card will expire.

Julie Busha - Co-Creator of Slawsa

Find a quote and live by it every day of your life.

Julie Busha is both the founder and CEO of benchmarketing, LLC and President of Nicole Foods, a food manufacturing company she co-owns and consumes the bulk of her time and efforts. Prior to becoming an entrepreneur, Busha spent her entire professional career in the world of sports marketing, starting with International Management Group and most recently as Director of Marketing for an agency owned by professional NASCAR driver, Bobby Labonte?a company she was recruited to build in 2007 where she continued to work with her client of nearly a decade, General Mills. Since venturing out on her own, helping companies reach their potential and growing brands through strategic marketing is, without a doubt, the most fulfilling job Busha could ask for.

Graduated with three departmental honors, as Academic All-American and Order of Omega from Winthrop University in 2000, Busha often goes back to lecture undergraduate marketing classes and work with MBA program students. In 2009, Busha was published in Sports Business Journal and she donates time to the Tarheel Weimaraner Rescue when she can. Busha resides with her husband and two weimaraners, Liesl and Ella, in Cramerton, NC and still finds time to run and hone her skills in the culinary arts.

What are you working on right now?

Slawsa?the condiment that may just change your life! (laughs) Seriously though, Slawsa is a whole new style of ?topper? on the market, and just as the name implies, it is a cross between ?slaw? and ?salsa.? A little sweet, a little heat, Slawsa is addictive atop hotdogs (which we affectionately refer to as ?Slawsa Dogs?), brats, burgers, pulled pork, fish, as a sandwich spread or even as a dip for tortilla chips. Slawsa is also a healthier alternative: fat-free, cholesterol-free, gluten-free and far less sodium as compared to traditional condiments?yet we have an insane amount of taste. We launched on grocery shelves one year ago this month and are now in over 3,500 grocery stores nationally. Gone are the days when serving ?boring? condiments will impress anyone so I urge everyone to go right now to the store to see what all the fuss is about. There is simply nothing more fulfilling than knowing that what you are doing day in and day out is making such an impact on growing a brand. No better feeling in the world.

Where did the idea for Slawsa come from?

The recipe for Slawsa was derived from a concoction that my partner?s late mother developed decades ago. In the late 90?s he tweaked it a bit to make it feasible for larger production runs yet still keeping that homemade taste. But like most great ideas, they don?t shine without execution and marketing?and that?s where I came in. After more than a decade of just being a dream, Slawsa is now a reality and hopefully we?ll make people change their opinions as to what a ?relish? is or could be.

What does your typical day look like?

I usually hop on the computer before 7 am and ultimately shut it down around 10:00 pm or later, and yes, work continues on the weekends. The way I figure it, if I?m willing to work 60-80 hours a week for years helping someone else build their company, why would I not work the same (or more) as my own boss? The great thing about marketing is that no two days are alike and with building the Slawsa brand, I wear many hats?from managing production and freight, building promotions, corresponding with our retail partners, pitching media, managing the web site and social media, accounting and everything in between. Having a full plate is a very comfortable feeling for me and think the more I have on my shoulders, the more I thrive.

How do you bring ideas to life?

I think there are ultimately two reasons why anyones ideas come to life: hard work and making wise decisions. Without one, you get nowhere fast. While I have always been creative, I?ve also had a knack for juggling 20 different projects at once, staying organized and proactive. I can?t explain how it happens? guess it?s just the way my brain is wired. There are many nights I can?t sleep or wake up at 2 in the morning because of a thought I can?t get out of my head. I figure, heck, while I?m up writing down that thought, I might as well get some work done. I?m also a person who is willing to take calculated risks knowing that I have confidence in my ability to achieve goals and get things done. I?m not a gambler by nature but when the odds are in my favor because I have influence over the results, I?m not afraid to take risks. It?s how Slawsa got off the ground.

What?s one trend that really excites you?

I?m very interested in seeing the evolution of crowd funding and certainly hope it is not a trend. We?re in an era where entrepreneurialism and small business is celebrated and on the rise. In my opinion, there?s no better country to embrace crowd funding and supporting small business dreams than here in the USA.

What was the worst job you ever had and what did you learn from it?

I really haven?t had any ?bad? jobs. In college though, to earn extra money, I was an anatomy lab assistant for several semesters, helping students dissect and locate various organs or musculature in their pigs and cats, respectively. Yes, I embrace my inner nerd. The hardest part involved grading the lab exams as not only do students have to name the items that I pinned, but they also had to spell them correctly to get full credit for each question. Imagine how many students couldn?t spell a muscle like a coracobrachialis? I originally felt bad having to mark half off because the student may have known what it was but couldn?t spell it. The fact was, Dr. Johnston was one of the best professors I ever had because he was thorough in his teachings and nothing on the test was a surprise. The opportunity for perfection was there. Those few students who put in that extra time to get full credit for those questions rose to the top while many of those who didn?t suffered a low grade or had to drop the class altogether. I think I?m cut from the same cloth in terms of high expectations and keeping those on my team who desire and work hard to rise to the top. I loathe excuses.

If you were to start again, what would you do differently?

There was a time in the past, I had been a little too trusting of someone that I looked up to professionally, and as a result, my generosity and good nature was taken advantage of. Obviously, everything is a learning experience so you take a lesson and move on, realizing that you wouldn?t be where you are today without those experiences. While it is disappointing that some people are willing to look past ethics for greed, without a doubt, I am proud what I stood for and have become far more guarded in terms of protecting my interests. In the words of Zapata, ?It is better to die on your feet than live on your knees.?

As an entrepreneur, what is the one thing you do over and over and recommend everyone else do?

Find a quote and live by it every day of your life. I?ve kept a quote by Benjamin Franklin at the bottom of my email signature for years now and take it very seriously: ?Well done is better than well said.? All too often, I have come across people in business or life that talk a great game but when it comes down to brass tacks, they can?t or don?t get the job done. I?ve always been the person eager to prove myself and have no issues rolling up my sleeves to do just that.

What is one failure you had as an entrepreneur, and how did you overcome it?

Isn?t failure the ?F? word? I am a believer that these perceived failures are instead learning experiences as I don?t know that I?ve failed at anything I haven?t set my mind to. A constant struggle for me is attempting to keep life and work more balanced. I think the last official vacation I took was in 2006 and while I always say I?ll do better at taking more time for myself, another year goes by. Tell you what, I?ll put out a press release when I do take that vacation.

What is one business idea that you?re willing to give away to our readers?

Partnerships are key. We have reduced so many costs (manufacturing, freight, etc) by partnering with other food manufacturers. High freight costs are often problematic for small businesses but know that there are large companies with their own fleets that are returning home with empty trailers. Many of these companies have backhaul service programs that you can pay a very low rate (we pay fuel only) for use of these trucks. It?s good for us and it saves a few bucks for the other manufacturer as well. Likewise, find a way to connect to other entrepreneurs to exchange ideas, tips, insights. I have been blessed to have been part of a closed Facebook group that has some of the brightest entrepreneurs in the US?no VC?s allowed! We?re all there to help each other and partnerships are a key to success.

If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you go about it?

This sounds like the a question that would be answered in the famous Steve Martin Christmas Wish bit from SNL. Seriously though, I think a big issue we face is society?s inability to take responsibility for their financial livelihood. We should all be preparing to never have to rely on government support. I understand there are exceptions, but there are far too many people living with huge credit card debt, living beyond their means paycheck to paycheck, foreclosing on homes that they never could afford to begin with, etc. With the Suzy Orman?s, Clark Howard?s and Dave Ramsey?s of the world amongst a plethora of self-help books, I just don?t get how people continue to make these bad choices and blame others for their situation. With the housing crisis, sure, the lenders were to blame for no money down loans, but at the same time, did these people make a budget to see that they could only afford a $250K house at best, versus the $450K house they were approved to buy? Knowledge is power and I think parents need to sit down with their young children now to start teaching fiscal responsibility?preferably by example. I can?t get people to change?they have to want to change themselves.

Tell us a secret.

If you?re one of the 200+ people on our Christmas card list, this is no secret. For over 10 years now, instead of the holiday letters you?re accustomed to seeing from family bragging about children, jobs and vacations, the annual Busha letter that accompanies the Wegman-like card (we put our dogs in the most unusual poses) is about as self-deprecating as it gets. We have many people who collect them and the creative writing is something I?m very proud to put out there?embarrassing, embellished and the occasional flat-out lie. The more you know my husband and I, the funnier they are and the harder it is to distinguish reality from fiction.

What are your three favorite online tools or resources and what do you love about them?

Facebook ? You know, I was rarely on Facebook (maybe once a quarter) before I became my own boss because it just wasn?t a priority. But, as I referenced before, I have been invited to a closed entrepreneur group that has been a great place to share experiences, tips and resources with each other. We?re all there to help each other and how awesome is that?

Analytics ? I do find it very helpful to look at analytics of who is visiting our company website and it certainly aids in strategy for growth.

Small Business Publications ? There are so very many out there and I do try when I can to absorb what I can from these great online resources for entrepreneurs.

What is the one book that you recommend our community should read and why?

It?s Called Work for a Reason!: Your Success is Your Own Damn Fault?by Larry Winget. I realize this has been out a few years but I appreciate the straight-forward approach to all of Winget?s books. If you take offense and aren?t laughing hysterically, I request you read it again and learn from it.

Three people we should follow on Twitter and why?

@EntMagazine ? just because it gives me a jump on reading stories that pertain to growing knowledge.
@BNDarticles ? same as above
@YFSmagazine ? same as above?get the picture

When was the last time you laughed out loud? What caused it?

I usually find something to laugh about daily but my most recent burst out loud was last night when my husband and I were watching Shark Tank. Sometimes you?re laughing at the fact that O?Leary has his filter turned off (or doesn?t have one to begin with) and sometimes it occurs when they are bickering amongst each other. Isn?t editing great?

Who is your hero?

I hesitate saying anyone famous because I?ve found that many assume that people who have great reputations also have great character. Not always the case. I?ll have name my high school coach, Jason Means. Anyone in the coaching/teaching profession has my respect but finding the balance to push your athletes to their potential while keeping the training fun is not easily achievable. The boys and girls programs were never segregated and his allowing me to run with the boys or do a few extra intervals helped my conditioning and confidence. He knew just how much to push us individually or as a team to inspire us. To top it off, he?s a stellar person I am honored to know.

Working in professional sports is pretty glamorous, right?

I can honestly say I have been so blessed to have traveled the path I did. My job out of college with IMG, one of the largest sports marketing agencies in the world, was one that I was offered in March before I graduated in May so it was nice not to have to look for a job. I worked across many platforms, worked with some inspiring people and you can?t ask more than to have a fortune 500 company as a client for so long. But, like with any job, there are sacrifices and as you go up the ranks, sometimes you find that the glamor has worn off. I saw too many people who stuck it out in the industry only to find themselves old and with regrets. To continue to grow professionally and not get stuck in a rut, you have to find a way to continually challenge yourself and I?m lucky to be able to do that.

Do you have traits that you work on improving?

I think we all have things we work on to improve ourselves and I?m no different. I am a highly competitive person. I don?t care if I?m participating in a sport or just playing Jeopardy with my husband on the couch, I absolutely hate losing, especially against myself. I think many people who excel in individual sports are the same way because it?s up to you and only you whether you succeed or fail. Not that being competitive is bad but I think I get myself frustrated when others around me don?t share that same drive. To me, it doesn?t make sense. I just have to remind myself that some people are perfectly happy settling for mediocrity and not let that take the wind out of my sails.
