New Parenting Site MommyCoach Lets Parents Video Chat With Experts Online

When you become a parent, you suddenly realize everyone has an opinion on how that job should be done, from well-meaning in-laws to strangers who walk up to you in the mall and lecture you about the health benefits of breastfeeding. (True story.) It can be a bit overwhelming. A new startup called MommyCoach wants to help parents and, as the name implies, specifically mothers, learn from experts on a range of topics related to their new lives, sharing not only tested parenting advice, but also information on subjects like food and nutrition, health and fitness, life and work, and more.

The company was founded by CEO Christophe Garnier in partnership with children’s class and activity facility Kidville, which has an equity stake in the company. Garnier is a serial entrepreneur who previously co-founded a kid-focused flash-sales site called Totsy (assets acquired by Modnique after investors turned down a $100 million acquisition offer in 2012, Garnier says), and a digital marketing agency called mSmart before that.

He explains that the idea to build yet another service targeting moms came directly from the time he spent at Totsy. “I was in constant communication with the mother’s audience [at Totsy],” says Garnier. “We were getting a lot of feedback and questions from moms, and a lot of the questions we were getting were not really related to what we were doing, which was retail. It was odd.”

MommyCoach_experts

After Totsy’s shutdown, he began researching the “mom’s Q&A” market, so to speak, and found that the majority of the big-name sites like BabyCenter or CafeMom, for example, were relatively static. These sites and those similar to them largely consisted of articles for parents to read, and if they were interactive, it often involved a forum where moms talked to other moms for advice and support.

“There is no way to talk to a qualified expert or professional about a very specific problem and get a very specific answer,” Garnier says. “That’s the goal of MommyCoach.”

At launch, MommyCoach offers a database of a couple of hundred “coaches” who are vetted ahead of their approval by a panel of four moms: licensed therapist Tammy Gold, nutritionist Keri Glassman, personal trainer Lindsay Brin, and life and work expert Lara Galloway. These coaches can then offer online video chat sessions of 30 or 60 minutes in length to interested moms on a variety of topics, from the pre-parenting days during pregnancy to life/work balance or stress reduction techniques – which we all know is what comes after.

Coaches price their own sessions, starting at $20 per session and up. In the near future, group classes will also be made available, allowing for more affordable rates.

In addition, to encourage user engagement on the site, MommyCoach gives out rewards from a selection of 25 brands, like 1800Flowers, Bulu Box, Bluum, Sproutkin, ThredUp, and other online businesses. Moms earn the points by completing sessions, inviting friends, writing reviews of their sessions, and other activities.

mommycoach-how

The idea of expert marketplaces is not new. There are those focused on education, teaming up developers, learning new skills, getting legal helpself-improvement, and more. But it’s fair to say that there’s not a market leader in the “parenting coach” video chat space at this time. There’s also some question as to whether there ever will be – after all, the thing about parenting is that it’s a major time suck when done well – setting aside an extra 30 minutes to an hour could be tough for moms, and especially working moms. And getting them to pay for sessions on a web filled with free advice for the googling is another challenge for a startup like this to overcome.

The site today is also skewed toward topics of the self-help variety, with only one of the top four overall categories (parenting and education, health and fitness, diet and nutrition, life and work) truly focused on the business of parenting, the developmental stages, and the problems that arise therein. While health, fitness, diet and “empowerment” matters are also important to moms (or anyone, really), they probably account for too much of the site’s content at present.

Meanwhile, MommyCoach is short in coverage on those more serious subjects that parents spend hours researching online regarding the behavioral and medical sides of childcare. For instance, there are only five “child behavior” specialists listed right now, and these experts are at best licensed therapists, which can still be a hit-or-miss experience. The site is also lacking the medical opinion provided by doctors who contribute to competitors’ sites, or are well-known enough to establish brands of their own.

So while the service will be useful for a broad range of topics, it’s not yet comprehensive. But Garnier says that MommyCoach will broaden its reach as early as next year to address some of these holes – the site is only launching in beta for now.

New York-based MommyCoach is backed by angel investors including Rob Keve (Fizzback), Allen Morgan (Klout, Fab), Mark Kingdon (Twitter, Refinery29) and White Star Capital (Summly, DollarShaveClub), as well as Spark Labs and its founder.

MommyCoach is creating the first Live Video SaaS platform allowing independant coaches & experts to take their practice to the digital world, therefore boosting their business and giving them access 100,000’s of new potential clients nationwide. Miner Gives $62M To West Australia Universities

PERTH, Australia (AP) — Mining magnate Andrew Forrest pledged on Tuesday to give 65 million Australian dollars ($62 million) to university education in his home state in one of Australia's largest philanthropic donations.

The chairman of iron ore miner Fortescue Metals Group said AU$50 million will be used to establish the Forrest Foundation to fund scholarships and postdoctoral fellowships at all five universities in Western Australia state.

Another AU$15 million will build a residence for rising star researchers called Forrest Hall at St. George's College at the University of Western Australia.

Forrest, a 52-year-old entrepreneur who graduated from the University of Western Australia in 1983 with an economics degree, said Australia needed to develop a higher-profile philanthropic culture.

"Let us all never forget that only education can be the final key to eliminate poverty in the world and raise the universal standard of living, ultimately to increase the nobility of the human cause," Forrest said in a statement.

Forrest and his wife Nicola are the first Australians to join "The Giving Pledge" movement founded by Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates and investor Warren Buffett, the head of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. The pledge commits billionaires to donate most of their wealth to charity.

Anna Draffin, deputy chief executive officer of the charity umbrella group Philanthropy Australia, described the Forrest gift as the biggest ever philanthropic donation from an Australian.

Only Irish-American businessman and philanthropist Chuck Feeney has been more generous in Australia, donating AU$500 million toward mostly higher education and medical research projects.

Apple Ups Its Fashion Cred, Names Burberry CEO Angela Ahrendts As SVP Of Retail And Online Stores

If you had any second thoughts about how Apple sees itself as a high-end fashion brand in the consumer electronics world, doubt no more: today the company announced that it is appointing Angela Ahrendts, currently the CEO of Burberry, as its SVP of retail and online stores. This is a new position at the company that will report directly to Tim Cook, and it takes effect in the Spring of 2014. At the UK-based fashion house, she is getting succeeded by designer Christopher Bailey.

Apple says Ahrendts will be in charge of “the strategic direction, expansion and operation” of both Apple retail and online stores. Apple’s direct sales operations have been a juggernaut that has redefined how consumer electronics are marketed and sold, with many like Microsoft, Samsung and Nokia trying to replicate the formula (less successfully). However, in the most recent quarter, the numbers were less stellar, with sales of $4 billion, flat on one year ago, and down 22% sequentially. That’s something that needs fixing.

“I am profoundly honored to join Apple in this newly created position next year, and very much look forward to working with the global teams to further enrich the consumer experience on and offline,” said Ahrendts in a statement. “I have always admired the innovation and impact Apple products and services have on people’s lives and hope in some small way I can help contribute to the company’s continued success and leadership in changing the world.”

“World” is the operative word here: the company has been pushing hard into new markets like China with a huge retail presence there, as well as breaking ground in other emerging countries like China. (Coincidentally, both are hits with Burberry; Ahrendts knows how to sell high-end product there.)

Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, meanwhile noted that Ahrendts “shares our values and our focus on innovation, and she places the same strong emphasis as we do on the customer experience.”

The connection between Burberry and Apple is an interesting one. As Apple was gearing up for a big sales push with its new generations of the iPhone in September, the fashion house used the device prominently during its Spring/Summer 2014 fashion show — a big enough deal that Apple press released the event. Little did we know at the time that this was something of a foreshadowing wink towards today’s news. (Hell, even that champagne color on the iPhone 5s is, frankly, a metallic version of Burberry beige.)

Of course, it goes beyond simply one fashion label using the latest handsets from a phone maker in a one-off cross-promotional opportunity. “This collaboration celebrates our relationship and shared foundation in design and craftsmanship. We have a mutual passion for creating beautiful products and unlocking emotive experiences through technology, which has made it intensely exciting to explore the capabilities of iPhone 5s,” said Christopher Bailey, Burberry Chief Creative Officer at the time. “We’re inspired by what this could mean for the future as we continue to explore the merging of physical and digital experiences.” This could be a reference to how Apple may be moving even deeper into the world of aesthetics and fashion in a wearables move. In any case, the physical and digital experience will likely be a modish one, also underscored by the appointment of YSL’s CEO Paul Deneve as the new head of still-unspecified “special projects.”

More generally, Apple has long cultivated itself as no ordinary garden variety consumer electronics brand. It’s apparent in its design (always high end), its pricing (premium), and its general comportment as a special, unique thing.

No, not a pedestrian Red Delicious apple (not even my favorite, Macintosh, which is now called Mac) but a rare variety from an orchard possibly once belonging to a noble family. In that regard, Apple is actually very close in ethos to how many high-end fashion brands, including Burberry (except for its “chav” stumble), have positioned themselves for years.

There is also an ironic riposte here to what precedes Ahrendts. Other retail heads (under different titles, another mark of how Apple is breaking a bit with things it doesn’t like from its past) have included Ron Johnson, who left to run JC Penney, and John Browett, who had headed up UK mid-range electronics chain Dixons. I don’t know if it was intentional or not, but JC Penney and Dixons are a very far cry from Burberry and Apple.

On the other hand, as Apple does move into more segmentation in its iPhone devices, you can see where the experience of someone like Ahrendts, who has successfully navigated Burberry into a position of regaining its stature with high-end customers but also continuing to further its name and products to a wider audience, would fit in perfectly.

Before Burberry, Ahrendts cut her teeth at a number of other fashion houses, including Liz Claiborne and Donna Karan.

This question may be solved by CU researchers

AURORA, Colo. (Oct. 11, 2013) Researchers at the University of Colorado have new insight into the age-old question of why maximum heart rate (maxHR) decreases with age. This decrease in maxHR not only limits the performance of aging athletes but it is also a leading cause for nursing home admittance for otherwise-healthy elderly individuals who no longer have the physical capacity required for independent living. We say we're just getting old and slowing down, but exactly what is it that is slowing down?

Everybody knows that aerobic capacity decreases with age. You know that chart in your gym that shows your target heart rate decreasing as you get older? Well, that's not a senior discount to let the elderly get off easy on their treadmill workouts. It's because older hearts simply can't beat as fast as younger hearts. So the older person who's doing 120 beats per minute is probably working harder at a higher percentage of maximum heart rate than the younger person who is at 150 beats per minute.

A new study by a group led by Catherine Proenza, PhD and Roger Bannister, PhD from the University of Colorado School of Medicine reports that one of the reasons for the age-dependent reduction in maximum heart rate is that aging depresses the spontaneous electrical activity of the heart's natural pacemaker, the sinoatrial node.

A dissertation from Eric D. Larson, a graduate from Proenza's lab in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, is described in the article. Larson said, "I utilized a method to record ECGs from conscious mice and found that maximum heart rate was slower in older mice, just as it is in older people. This result wasn't unexpected. But what was completely new was that the slower maxHR was because the individual pacemaker cells called sinoatrial myocytes, or 'SAMs' from old mice just couldn't beat as fast as SAMs from young mice."

The researchers recorded the tiny electrical signals from the isolated cells and found that SAMs from old mice beat more slowly, even when they were fully stimulated by the fight-or-flight response which can be observed in these individual cells. The slower beating rate was due to a limited set of changes in the action potential waveform, the electrical signal that is generated by the cells. The changes were caused by altered behavior of some ion channels in the membranes of the older cells. (Ion channels are proteins that conduct electricity across the cell membrane. Imagine a balloon with little tiny pinholes that open and close to let the air in and out; ion channels are like the pinholes.)

Like most initial discoveries in basic science, this study opens many more questions and avenues for further research. But the significance of the study is that it raises the possibility that sinoatrial ion channels and the signaling molecules that regulate them could be novel targets for drugs to slow the loss of aerobic capacity with age. In the meanwhile, Proenza notes that "although maximum heart rate goes down for everybody equally, regardless of physical conditioning, people can improve and maintain their aerobic capacity at all ages by exercising."

This study will be published in the Oct. 14 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America.

Wonder why I'm sharing on this area? I was invited to stay with a friend on the weekend and we talked about our Sunday School Lesson. I shared my notes with her & in the mean time I looked at some of her books and magazines and noticed some things that I begin to ponder on.

Now understand that I have no Seminary/Theological teaching/training, but read and study the Scriptures for yourselves.Ezekiel 7 ... Israel's final desolation. Mournful repentance of those who escape. Under the type of a chain is shewed their miserable captivity. The enemies defile the sanctuary because of the Israelites' abomination.

Matthew 6:19 ... Our treasure. Where our treasure is to be laid.</ins></ins>

Ezekiel 7:19 ... They shall cast their ... silver ... in the streets, and their ... gold ... shall be removed (for a separation, or uncleanness); their ...silver(Proverbs/Mishle 11:4/Zephaniah 1:18) and their ... gold,... shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the Lord: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock (Ezekiel 44:12; 14:3,4) of their iniquity.

'Love Potion No. 9' singer sues over Clovers' name

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Harold Winley performed the hit song "Love Potion No. 9" with the R&B group The Clovers more than a half-century ago, but now the 80-year-old says another group is trying to keep him from performing using the Clovers name.

Winley, now a Florida resident, says he was in his teens when he and four others started performing as The Clovers in the Washington area. The group played at the city's Apollo Theater, eventually signed with Atlantic Records and celebrated when "Love Potion No. 9" became their biggest hit in 1959.

Two groups later performed as The Clovers, including one that trademarked the name in the 1980s. A dispute led to the lawsuit that was filed earlier this year in Washington. Both sides will meet Monday to try to work things out.
