3 Reasons Investors Shouldn't Cheer an S&P 500 ... - Yahoo! Finance

As the S&P 500 continues to hit resistance near its record closing high of 1,565.15 set on October 9, 2007, investors are spending a lot of time talking about where stocks are relative to all time highs. But the dirty truth is they don't matter at all. Not even a little bit. It's fun to think about where you were last time the major stock indexes were at these levels, but it shouldn't have any more bearing on your life than the outcome of your NCAA pool.

The loquacious and unusually well-coiffured Lee Munson, chief investment officer at Portfolio LLC and author of Rigged Money, joined Breakout to run through three of the nearly infinite reasons not to make too much of where the market is relative to history.

1) The Dow Jones Industrial Average is irrelevant, and the S&P 500 isn't much better

"It bothers me immensely that people even care about what the Dow does," rages Munson. The Dow is 30 companies selected by an editorial team. The selection process is like Papal elections without the smoke. No one really knows what goes on behind the scenes.

The S&P 500 is the index of record for the pros but it doesn't do a much better job of keeping precise score. Over the last 3 years about 40 companies have been swapped in and out of the S&P 500. If you go back into the meat of the crisis when financial companies were simply disappearing at a stunning rate, the problem becomes worse.

Using an index as an absolute market measure is like tracking your height without regard to what kind of shoes you're wearing.

2) It doesn't account for inflation

Inflation rates have been subdued over the last decade plus but years of compounding add up. Running the numbers through a simple online inflation calculator shows the S&P 500 is still more than 10% off its 2007 high, and that all-time high isn't usually measured against 2000 when the S&P got over 1,500 for the first time.

Munson tells you the real all-time high at the end of the clip... See if you can guess.

3) This business cycle is different

Relative highs only matter as a function of fundamentals. Stocks trading at a PE of 50x are, at least by that measure, much more expensive than a market priced at 10x earnings. The result of that multiplier, in other words the nominal value of the market, tells you very little about how richly it's priced.

To that point Munson makes the case that the U.S. could be in the middle of an elongated business cycle. For whatever reason (most likely the Fed) business cycles have been extending. The result is a seemingly endless recession leading to a long but almost imperceptible recovery.

"We may be seeing three, four, five years of economic growth," Munson notes, and "we're hitting 'all-time highs' in the middle of a business cycle not necessarily at the end". Trailing PE means nothing; if earnings keep expanding it helps stocks.

As for when the S&P 500 made its real all-time high? August of 2000 at 2,045 in today's dollars. If you want to get that record celebration you need to wait for another 30% worth of gains.

Budweiser Clydesdale Farm Opens Next Week ? CBS St. Louis

(Hope – Super Bowl TV star – at home in Warm Springs Ranch in March 2013)

(Hope ? Super Bowl TV star ? at home in Warm Springs Ranch in March 2013)

BOONVILLE, Mo. ? Spring means the return of baseball and, in just a few days, opening day celebrations around the United States. It also marks another annual event celebrated by fans of the Budweiser Clydesdales ? ?opening day? at Warm Springs Ranch in mid-Missouri for public tours, where more than 35 baby Clydesdales are expected to be born in 2013.

Jeff Knapper, general manager for Clydesdale operations for Anheuser-Busch, said that through March 27, seventeen baby Clydesdales have been born at Anheuser-Busch?s state-of-the-art Clydesdale breeding farm, which is home to more than 100 Budweiser Clydesdales. This includes Hope, the star of Budweiser?s award-winning and top-ranked Super Bowl commercial, and Stan, the first-born foal of 2013, named after all-time MLB great Stan Musial.

Public tours begin Monday, April 1, and the ranch remains open until Oct. 31.

?Some tour dates, particularly Saturdays in the spring, already are sold out,? Knapper said. ?On some other days there is limited availability. The popularity of the Super Bowl spot has certainly piqued the public?s curiosity around the training of Budweiser Clydesdales and how they spend their early years.?

The ranch offers twice-daily tours every day except for Wednesday. The tour costs $10 per person and lasts one-and-a-half hours. To reserve a tour spot (reservations are required) or for more information, visit www.warmspringsranch.com.

New for 2013, the ranch now offers a VIP tour. On the tour, guests climb aboard a custom-built vehicle to enjoy a private excursion on the 300-plus acres and talk with Clydesdale handlers. The VIP tour also includes time in the pastures with the Clydesdales, as well as samples of Budweiser for adult guests older than 21 at the end of the tour and a photo opportunity with one of the world famous Budweiser Clydesdales. Each VIP tour costs $500 and can accommodate up to 16 guests, with the tour offered once daily.

In a little more than a week, on April 7, the Clydesdales will celebrate a major milestone ? the 80th anniversary of their association with Anheuser-Busch. The Budweiser Clydesdales have been an integral part of Anheuser-Busch?s heritage since April 7, 1933, and their strength and majesty symbolize Budweiser quality and team spirit. They were formally introduced to celebrate the repeal of Prohibition for beer.

John Soto, supervisor of Warm Springs Ranch (pictured with Hope), has been providing care for the Clydesdales for 33 years. In fact, he was the inspiration for the handler featured in the ?Brotherhood? Super Bowl commercial that won USA Today?s AdMeter.

?Since the Super Bowl, many people have asked me what it feels like to have been portrayed by an actor on such a large stage,? Soto said. ?I tell them I?m humbled and lucky, but that?s really how I feel every day, getting to share my life with and care for these beautiful animals, each of which has their own personality.?

In 2012 Warm Springs Ranch welcomed 16,252 visitors from around the world, up more than 36 percent from the year before, and also welcomed 28 baby Clydesdales: 18 fillies (girls) and 10 colts (boys). For opening week this year, visitors from more than 10 states, spanning from California to Florida, have already reserved spots on the tours.

Rebel spox: Bosco Ntaganda wanted control of M23

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) ? A spokesman for the Congolese rebel movement M23 says warlord Bosco Ntaganda ended up at the International Criminal Court because of his "stupidity" in believing he could control the rebel group.

Rene Abandi, who heads a delegation of M23 fighters that has been negotiating peace with the Congolese government, said Thursday that Ntaganda was a schemer whose violent expulsion from eastern Congo left the group feeling more secure but undermined prospects for peace.

Abandi said Ntaganda tried to "influence the chain of command" but went too far when he challenged the M23's Gen. Sultani Makenga.

Makenga's side gained the upper hand in clashes earlier this month with a faction loyal to Ntaganda, who then fled to Rwanda and turned himself in at the U.S. Embassy.

6 Great Tips In Chartering A Yacht

Owning a yacht can be very expensive. But you can still have the chance to enjoy sailing the Whitsundays on a yacht even if you do not purchase one. Just look for a reliable boat charter in Whitsundays. Hire a boat for a couple of days or even weeks. A lot of people are finding this to be a truly convenient way of spending some quality time with family and friends during the holidays.

However, you need to consider some few important things when you are planning to hire a boat to cruise the Whitsundays. Check out the following.

1. You primary goal is to get a yacht that fits your purpose at a price you can well afford.

2. Consider the number of people that will go cruising with you. If you have a fairly large group, do not settle with a small yacht just because you want to save money. You might not enjoy a deck that is too crowded. There are a number of Whitsunday private yacht charters that offer nice discounts on large boats. So, do your research well to get the best deal.

3. Get an estimate on the number of people that can comfortably fit on a boat of any size. Consider space for family gathering or night parties, enjoying the sun on the deck, and moving around. Also, you have to tell the yacht charter company how many will be on board, so they can organize services accordingly.

4. You must book a yacht well in advance. When you do the booking in the last minute, you might be forced to get a boat that does not perfectly fit your group's needs, or the boat that is way beyond your budget, or you can even ran out of good yachts to hire. That can happen. Several boat charters offer different discounts for advance bookings. Take advantage of these. Booking ahead of time also gives the charter company ample time to prepare and service the vessel for it to be ready for your cruise.

5. Since there are various types of yacht models that are suited for different purposes, get the one that will suit the activities you plan to do. Get a simple boat if you intend to go on a fishing trip with a couple of friends. But, if you are to go sailing and sightseeing with a larger group, you will need an equally larger and more powerful yacht model that is capable of traveling long distances. Also, consider your personal preference if you are going on your own, with a special someone, or with a handful of friends. Decide if you want a sailboat or a motor yacht. Sailboats are generally slower and are perfect for a romantic cruise. Luxury motor yachts can provide you with taste of a sophisticated and elegant lifestyle on the sea.

6. Do your research in terms of prices and compare. Compare offers, discounts, and services. This is one of the most effective ways to find out which is the best deal available. Also, be meticulous with the safety and reliability of the boat. Choose a newer yacht as much as possible. You do not have to necessarily go for the cheapest.
