Australia: Jumbo Ends Shipment of MOF ... - LNG World News

On August 12, 2012, Jumbo successfully completed the transport and discharge of twenty-five MOF caissons for the Gorgon Project.

These concrete caissons will form the base of the heavy lift Material Offloading Facility for the Chevron LNG Plant, to be constructed on Barrow Island in Australia. The crew of the Jumbo Jubilee accomplished a discharge rate of one caisson per day. Jumbo?s transport solution supported the Gorgon project perfectly by reducing projects critical path activities in the development of the Material Offloading Facility.

Scope of work

The Jumbo Jubilee transported the twenty-five caissons from Port Klang, Malaysia to Barrow Island, Australia in four shipments. The caissons, weighing from 600t up to 700t (D: 12.5 and H: 16.8 meter), were lifted from a barge and placed in the hold of the vessel for transport. Due to the enormous hold capacity of the Jumbo Jubilee and its ability to sail with open hatches, it was possible to transport seven MOF caissons simultaneously, while maintaining a minimum ship draft. At Barrow Island, Jumbo used anchor points and mooring lines to keep the vessel in position while discharging the caissons.

Environmental compliance

Barrow Island is a ?Class A Nature Reserve?. Jumbo developed and implemented a strict Quarantine Compliance Plan, including an extensive familiarization and environmental training program. This Environmental Compliance Program, combined with Jumbo?s ?Stay Well? Program and the vigilance of the captain and crew, resulted in a project completion with zero environmental conservation incidents, zero safety incidents, and zero lost time on Jumbo?s account.

On behalf of the Saipem Leighton Consortium, DB Schenker awarded the contract to Jumbo and applauded Jumbo for performing the whole operation as planned with respect to every detail, safety, environmental conservation, transportation, mooring, and tidal discharging.

DB Schenker also awarded Jumbo an additional Gorgon related contract for the shipment of three 1,175t amine absorbers, and an 444t regenerator from Masan in Korea to Henderson in Australia, employing the Jumbo Jubilee and the Fairpartner.

The Gorgon Project

The Gorgon Project is one of the world?s largest natural gas projects and the largest single-resource project in Australian history. It is operated by Chevron and is a joint venture of the Australian subsidiaries of Chevron (approximately 47%), ExxonMobil (25%), Shell (25%), Osaka Gas (1.25%), Tokyo Gas (1%) and Chubu Electric Power (0.417%).

Georgia says 3 soldiers, 11 militants killed near Russia border

TBILISI (Reuters) - Georgian forces shot dead 11 gunmen, and three soldiers were killed in an operation to free hostages near the border with Russia, the Interior Ministry said on Wednesday.

It said five soldiers had also been wounded near the frontier with Russia's Dagestan region, but did not give the nationality of the gunmen or say whether they had entered the country from Russia.

If the gunmen turn out to be from Russia, the incident could increase tension between Moscow and pro-Western Tbilisi, whose relations are still strained following a five-day war in August 2008 over two Russian-backed separatist regions in Georgia.

"Another attempt to export a new wave of tension and instability into Georgia from our northern neighbor will be stopped at the very beginning," Georgia's President Mikheil Saakashvili said in a televised statement.

Saakashvili said intelligence data showed that most of the militants were killed.

Georgia had sent troops to the region in the north of the country on Tuesday to help local police release several hostages. An unspecified number of hostages had been freed and there was at least one exchange of gunfire during the operation, an Interior Ministry spokeswoman said.

A standoff continued on Wednesday, with the troops surrounding six militants in a Caucasus Mountain gorge.

On Tuesday, residents of Lapankuri, a village 30 km (18 miles) from the border, told Georgia's Rustavi-2 television they were concerned because five neighbors had been missing for days and they had seen men who appeared to be from Dagestan in the area.

Rustavi-2 later reported that gunmen had taken three groups of people hostage in the northern Kakheti region.

BORDER POST SHOOTING

Footage released by the Interior Ministry showed a resident of Lapankuri, Levan Khutsarauli, who said several bearded men took him and other villagers hostage.

"They warned us that they would kill us if we only tried to run away," Khutsarauli said. Media access to the area of fighting has been restricted by the authorities.

It was unclear whether there could have been any link with a shooting at a Russian border post in Dagestan late on Tuesday in which authorities said a border guard killed seven fellow servicemen before being shot.

Insurgents fighting to carve an Islamic state from the North Caucasus attack Russian officials and law enforcement personnel almost daily, and have also increasingly targeted mainstream Muslim leaders who are backed by the authorities.

It was not clear why militants in Dagestan might cross the border into the neighboring former Soviet republic and seize hostages.

A spokesman for Russia's FSB security service, Vadim Shibayev, told RIA news agency that there were no registered cases of violation of the Russian-Georgian border.

Russia sent troops into Georgia in August 2008, repelling a Georgian offensive aimed at gaining control of separatist South Ossetia, which has run its own affairs with Moscow's support for 20 years.

The conflict also enveloped breakaway Abkhazia. Moscow recognized Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent countries following the war and increased its military presence in the regions, drawing criticism from the United States and NATO.

Georgia, which holds a parliamentary election on October 1, and Russia still have no diplomatic relations and communicate through Swiss diplomats.

Dear PS,

There are many ways to download photos from various sites and save them to a collection on your computer, but that can take a pretty long time and involve a lot of manual effort. Instead, you can use two social services to do the work for you. After a little setup, you'll have all your photos?and photos from your friends and family?all in one place without lifting a finger.

Before we can get started, you're going to need to sign up for a couple of free accounts: Social Folders and IFTTT (If This Then That). Social Folders is like Dropbox for your social media (more info here) and IFTTT is a clever tool that can automate various actions with webapps and services (more info here). Depending on what you want to accomplish, and how many different photos sites you use/your friends use, you may only need one of these services. We'll go over both and you can decide what suits you best.

Link Social Folders to Your Photo Accounts

Social Folders has two components: a web interface for setting up the links between your social media accounts and its service, and a desktop app to sync files between Social Folders and your computer. If you've already signed up for an account, you've likely downloaded the desktop software you'll need to use Social Folders. If not, do that now, log into your Social Folders account in your web browser, and follow these steps to set up your first service:

• Click the green "Add a new service" button on the left.
• You'll see a long list of social media services, like Facebook, Flickr, Instagram, and more. You can choose any photo site you'd like to start with, but for this example we'll use Flickr. To get started with Flickr, click the "Connect to Flickr" button on the right.
• A window will pop up asking you to log in and authorize Social Folders. Go ahead and authorize it.
• Social Folders will make the connection between Flickr and itself. Once finished, you'll be asked if you want to download all of your photos or "Access my settings." If you want to download every photo in your collection, go ahead and choose that option and call it a day. If not, click "Access my settings" and read on.
• The pop-up window will close and you'll find yourself on a page displaying all your Flickr sets. "Future Albums" will be selected and highlighted already, letting you know that anything you add to Flickr will be synced to your computer(s) using Social Folders?even if you add photos via Flickr's web interface on a friend's computer while traveling across the country. You can also choose any other sets you want to keep in sync. Select any albums you want and you're done!

You can repeat this process for any other services you use. With some services, such as Facebook, you can even sync your friends' photos, or any photos you were tagged in, automatically. This will help keep your collection complete without lifting a finger. Additionally, you can now upload all your photos to any linked photo service by just dropping them in the appropriate Social Folders folder on your computer. You'll be able to manage 2,000 files for free. If you want to sync more than 2,000 files, Social Folders charges $2 per month or $10 per year to remove all limitations.

Automate Photo Downloads with IFTTT

IFTTT can automatically retrieve new photos from various services and sync them to your Dropbox account. While Social Folders is ideal for your photo collections, when you want to pull from the collections of others IFTTT handles that task beautifully. To start syncing, you'll need to create a new recipe. Here's how to do it, using Instagram as an example:

• Click the "Create" link up top.
• Click the "this" link, highlighted in blue.
• Choose Flickr from the grid of services. If you haven't used IFTTT with Instagram before, you'll need to activate IFTTT's Instagram Channel (by clicking the "Activate" button). If prompted, log into Instagram and then authorize the link between it and IFTTT.
• You'll be presented with a grid of Instagram-related triggers. While you may want to set up more than one trigger, the most likely choice will be "New photo by specific user," as it will allow you to automatically download any photos from a user you like/follow. Choose it.
• Enter the name of the Instagram user whose photos you want to download.
• Click the "that" link, highlighted in blue.
• Choose Dropbox from the grid of services. Activate and authorize the Dropbox channel just like you did with Instagram (if necessary).
• From the Dropbox actions grid, choose "Add a file from URL."
• IFTTT will fill in all the relevant details for you so that every new photo will be added to your Dropbox account with a relevant file name. You can make changes if you want or just keep the settings exactly as they are. When you're satisfied, click the "Create Action" button.
• IFTTT will show you your completed recipe. If it all looks good to you, click the "Create Recipe" button.

Now new Instagram photos from the user you specified will be added to your Dropbox automatically so you don't need to download them yourself. You can repeat this process for other Instagram users or use the same steps to add other services as well. For more options, check out this process for creating digital duplicates of all your photos.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is one of the viruses that most infected people carry without ill effects. Once infected you are infected for life and, although it normally is dormant, it can become active again at any point in time. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Immunity and Ageing shows that CMV infection is a significant risk factor for the type 2 diabetes in the elderly.

Obesity, inactivity and aging are known to be associated with insulin resistance, one of the first signs of incipient diabetes. However only a third of those with insulin resistance go on the develop type 2 diabetes. So what marks these people as different? Why do their pancreas' fail? Genetic and environmental factors are thought to play a part but so also does inflammation. People with type 2 diabetes usually have raised levels of biological markers for inflammation such as elevated CRP and larger numbers of active white blood cells.

Chronic infections including CMV can 'stress' the immune system and when researchers from Leiden University Medical Centre and University of Tubingen Medical School compared glucose regulation with antibodies to CMV (or CMV seropositivity) in over 500 participants of the Leiden 85-plus Study they found that having CMV was associated with type 2 diabetes.

The researchers suggest that CMV could be either acting directly on pancreatic cells or indirectly by causing the immune system attacking the pancreas. Dr Andrea Maier, who led the investigation explained, " In our study we realised that although CMV seropositivity was associated with type 2 diabetes, higher levels of HnA1c and high non-fasting glucose the actual level of antibodies against CMV was not. "

This study is looking at the effect of CMV on the very old. By their very nature these people have had longer to become infected with CMV and have low risks for other factors which are linked to diabetes or to cardiovascular disease. While it may not be possible to extrapolate these findings to the general population it seems likely that finding a way to overcome CMV infections may reduce diseases, such as diabetes, later in life.

I?m a Diet Coke fanatic who thinks the real stuff is just too damn syrupy, so on the one hand I sympathize with the passionate pursuit of soft-drink excellence but on the other hand am all too willing to imagine a world without Coca-Cola. What I liked about this scene is that it did a better job than last week?s ?Gray Matter? whining of conveying to me what Walt?s all about: the demonstration of skill and the quest for acknowledgment of that skill. It?s easy to dismiss this as ?ego? the way Mike does, but as a professional writer I would be a bit hypocritical to do so. I?m in this line of work while lots of my classmates from college are toiling away in lucrative obscurity at some law firm or consulting outfit, in part, because I like the idea of having my byline out there in the world and relish positive feedback.

It hardly justifies murder, but this ?ego? is a very normal human motivation, and sometimes good things come out of it. Why did Neil Armstrong go through all that trouble to get to the moon, after all, when he could have just had a nice quiet life as a pilot?

Walt?s demand for recognition from Declan??Say my name??helped bring home that, on a practical level, his effort to obtain the recognition he craves through the meth trade is doomed. It?s tragic, even. After all, the first rule of running a successful drug-trafficking enterprise is precisely to not have your name out there for everyone to hear. The only real superfan Heisenberg has is Hank, and Hank?s obsession with cracking the case is deadly to Walt?s operation. It?s just not possible to be a famous and widely admired meth kingpin. To last in the game you need to do what Gus did and stay very, very quiet. Walt doesn?t have it in him.

Now Mike. It?s interesting that Walt chooses to see this as a kind of tragic misunderstanding, while everything else that?s happened has been basically a beyond-his-control logical playing out of events. If anything, that seems backward to me. Todd really didn?t need to shoot that kid. Letting Jane die, poisoning Brock?that stuff didn?t have to happen. But if there?s one thing that years spent watching organized-crime TV dramas have taught me, it?s that you can?t just ?cash out? of an ongoing criminal conspiracy. As soon as I heard the lawyer had flipped, I thought Walt was going to kill Mike in cold blood; I was genuinely surprised to discover that it took provocation. Having Mike out there, with the DEA knowing his name and absolutely (and accurately) convinced that he knows more, is a huge risk whether or not he skips town. The guy had to go.

I was also glad to see Mike taken down a peg in the audience?s eyes by the way he abandoned his granddaughter out on the playground to beat the cops. He?s been built up a bit as a kind of sympathetic counterpoint to Walt?s mania, and this was a good reminder that the dude?s a cold-blooded killer with a longer criminal CV than Walt?s. I?m sad, though, that with his untimely demise we?ll probably never find out what happened in Philadelphia.

Which I think leaves me punting on Todd. Miriam, I wonder where you think this is going and why Walt doesn?t seem more suspicious of his lack of interest in money. After what?s gone down already, surely he realizes that teaching the cook to others is a source of danger. Right? Maybe he?s got a plan?

Atlanta's Morris Brown College, Founded in 1881, Filed for Chapter ...

On Saturday, Morris Brown College voluntarily filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Atlanta, Georgia. ?According to court filings, the college was founded in 1881 and its beginning marked ?the?opening of the first educational institution in Georgia under sole African-American patronage.? ?However, in 2002, the college was denied accreditation membership ?after over seven decades of continued?accreditation from the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and?Schools.? ?The loss of accreditation meant that Morris Brown College did not qualify for federal funding and its students were ineligible for financial aid.

For the past year, according to bankruptcy court documents, Morris Brown has been in discussions with?Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools to obtain accreditation and ?has met the vast majority of the requirements?for that accreditation.? ?However, it has failed to demonstrate financial stability, which is a prerequisite for accreditation. ?The college filed for chapter 11 protection because it ?determined that reorganizing its affairs in Chapter 11 is the most efficient and expeditious?manner in which to resolve its remaining financial issues.? ?Morris Brown?s president,?Dr. Stanley Pritchett, stated in a declaration filed with the court that ?Morris Brown College anticipates that upon reorganization of its financial?condition, it could achieve candidacy leading to full accreditation through TRACS within six to?twelve months of its emergence from Chapter 11.?

In the same declaration, Dr. Pritchett also identified the key challenges currently facing the college:

The most daunting challenges faced by Morris Brown College at this time are: its?excessive long-term bond debt that needs to be restructured or otherwise resolved; its lack of?federal financial aid for student support and, in turn, increased revenues to the College; and its?need to establish a sound investment program to encourage philanthropic giving and charitable?donations from its supporters to sustain the College into the future.

As such, the college intends to attempt to use the bankruptcy process to achieve certain goals:

[Morris Brown College] seeks in the Chapter 11 process to achieve the following?outcomes: (1) relief from and resolution of outstanding bond and other significant creditor?obligations, (2) financial stability sufficient to meet the requirements of TRACS and obtain?accreditation, and (3) a court-approved plan with these elements that will attract donor support.

The college?s chapter 11 petition lists assets of between $10 and $50 million. ?Liabilities within the same range are listed as being owed to between 200 and 1,000 creditors. ?Morris Brown College is represented in the bankruptcy case by the law firms of Dilworth Paxson LLP and?The Moore Law Group, LLC.

Snooki Gives Birth to Baby Boy, Apocalypse Nigh!

Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi is officially a mom.

The Jersey Shore star and her fiance, Jionni LaValle, welcomed their baby boy - 6-pound, 5-ounce Lorenzo Dominic LaValle - into the world this morning.

"The world just got another Guido!!!" a Polizzi rep told MTV, which confirmed the baby's arrival moments ago. "Nicole, Jionni & Enzo are doing great!"

Enzo was born at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, N.J. around 3 a.m. Sunday, according to MTV, which congratulated Snooki and Jionni LaValle.

"We couldn't be happier for Nicole and Jionni on the healthy delivery of their baby boy!" the network said in a statement. "We are looking forward to Lorenzo's first trip to the Jersey Shore and can't wait to see his first animal print onesie."

Jersey Shore will return for a sixth season this fall, and her spinoff Snooki & JWoww has also been picked up for a new season, though it's unclear the extent to which Enzo will appear on either, or whether he has an agent yet.

So there you go. Snooki is a mom. In charge of keeping a small human alive.

Hundreds in Joplin, Missouri, rally for Muslims and mosque

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Reuters) - A rally for Muslims in Joplin, Missouri, drew hundreds of people on Saturday night, nearly three weeks after a local mosque was destroyed by a fire which members of the Islamic community suspect was a hate crime, the organizer of the event said.

The gathering at a city park was promoted on a Facebook page as a way to show "that love is stronger than fear or hatred."

Organizers saw the rally in part as a giving-back to the local Muslim community because their mosque was a relief center for victims of the May 2011 tornado in Joplin, which took 161 lives and damaged or destroyed more than 8,000 buildings.

"It's amazing," rally organizer and college student Ashley Carter said in a telephone interview during the event. "People who are of completely different cultures and beliefs are here having a conversation with each other, which is awesome."

She said hundreds of people took part in the rally, but could not provide an exact number.

Federal and local investigators have not determined the cause of the fire that destroyed the Islamic Center of Joplin, on August 6, but leaders of the local Muslim community suspect it was a hate crime. A small fire also occurred there on July 4.

The fire that destroyed the Joplin mosque happened the morning after a white supremacist shot dead six worshipers at a Sikh temple outside Milwaukee, then killed himself after he was wounded by police. Police and Sikh temple members speculated that he might have mistakenly thought Sikhs were Muslims.

About $406,000 has been raised to rebuild the Joplin mosque. The donations have far exceeded the goal of $250,000, said Kimberly Kester, spokeswoman for the Islamic Society of Joplin.

"There are really no words we can use to convey how appreciative we are and how much this means to us," Kester said. "Everyone is coming together to be a stronger community."

Tribesmen call on Pakistan not to launch operation

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) ? Hundreds of tribal elders, religious leaders and militants have called on Pakistan not to launch a military operation in the country's last major militant sanctuary.

Malik Nasrullah Khan, a tribal elder who attended the meeting, said Sunday the group cited a nonaggression pact it says the army has with the most powerful militant leader in the North Waziristan tribal area, Hafiz Gul Bahadur.

Commanders loyal to Bahadur were present at the meeting Saturday in Eidak town in North Waziristan.

Authorities see Bahadur as less of a threat because he has focused attacks in Afghanistan, not in Pakistan. But the military has never officially acknowledged having a nonaggression pact with him.

The U.S. says Pakistan plans to launch an operation against the Pakistani Taliban in North Waziristan in the near future.

First man on moon Neil Armstrong dead at 82: family

(Reuters) - U.S. astronaut Neil Armstrong, who took a giant leap for mankind when he became the first person to walk on the moon, has died at the age of 82, his family said on Saturday.

The family said in a statement online that Armstrong died following complications from heart-bypass surgery he underwent earlier this month, just two days after his birthday on August 5.

As commander of the Apollo 11 mission, Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969. As he stepped on the dusty surface, Armstrong said: "?That's one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind."

Those words endure as one of the best known quotes in the English language.

A bit of controversy still surrounds his famous quote. The broadcast did not have the "a" in "one small step for a man..." He and NASA insisted static had obscured the "a," but after repeated playbacks, he admitted he may have dropped the letter.

Repeated attempts have been made using modern acoustic equipment to search for the missing letter, with one Australian scientist claiming to have found it. Armstrong has expressed a preference, however, that written quotations include the "a" in parentheses.

The Apollo 11 astronauts' euphoric moonwalk provided Americans with a sense of achievement in the space race with Cold War foe the Soviet Union and at a time when Washington was engaged in a bloody war with the communists in Vietnam.

Neil Alden Armstrong was 38 years old at the time and even though he had fulfilled one of mankind's age-old quests that placed him at the pinnacle of human achievement, he did not revel in his accomplishment. He even seemed frustrated by the acclaim it brought.

"I guess we all like to be recognized not for one piece of fireworks but for the ledger of our daily work," Armstrong said in an interview on CBS's "60 Minutes" program in 2005.

He once was asked how he felt knowing his footprints would likely stay on the moon's surface for thousands of years. "I kind of hope that somebody goes up there one of these days and cleans them up," he said.

A VERY PRIVATE MAN

James Hansen, author of "First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong," told CBS: "All of the attention that ... the public put on stepping down that ladder onto the surface itself, Neil never could really understand why there was so much focus on that."

The Apollo 11 moon mission turned out to be Armstrong's last space flight. The next year he was appointed to a desk job, being named NASA's deputy associate administrator for aeronautics in the office of advanced research and technology.

Armstrong's post-NASA life was a very private one. He took no major role in ceremonies marking the 25th anniversary of the moon landing. "He's a recluse's recluse," said Dave Garrett, a former NASA spokesman.

"Howard Hughes had nothing on him," he said, speaking of the exceedingly private aviator.

Hansen said stories of Armstrong dreaming of space exploration as a boy were apocryphal, although he was long dedicated to flight. "His life was about flying. His life was about piloting," Hansen said.

He left the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) a year after Apollo 11 to become a professor of engineering at the University of Cincinnati.

DECLINES OFFERS TO RUN FOR OFFICE

After his aeronautical career, Armstrong was approached by political groups but unlike former astronauts John Glenn and Harrison Schmitt who became U.S. senators, he declined all offers.

Armstrong made a rare public appearance several years ago when he testified to a congressional hearing against President Barack Obama administration's plans to buy rides from other countries and corporations to ferry U.S. astronauts to and from the International Space Station.

Armstrong also said that returning humans to the moon was not only desirable, but necessary for future exploration -- even though NASA says it is no longer a priority.

He lived in the Cincinnati area with his wife, Carol.

"We are heartbroken to share the news that Neil Armstrong has passed away," the family said in their statement. "Neil was our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend."

His family expressed hope that young people around the world would be inspired by Armstrong's feat to push boundaries and serve a cause greater than themselves.

"The next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink," the family said.

Michael Collins, a crew mate of Armstrong's on the Apollo 11 flight, said through NASA's senior spokesman, Bob Jacobs: "He was the best, and I will miss him terribly."

The space agency sent out a brief statement in the wake of the news, saying it "offers its condolences on today's passing of Neil Armstrong, former test pilot, astronaut, and the first man on the moon."

Armstrong is survived by his two sons, a stepson and stepdaughter, 10 grandchildren, a brother and a sister, NASA said.

Romney touts Bain experience in Wall Street Journal editorial

(Evan Vucci/AP)After months of negative attacks from his Democratic opponents, Mitt Romney is trying to turn his resume at Bain Capital into a positive for his campaign, arguing in a new Wall Street Journal editorial the experience he gained there would help him in the White House.

"The lessons I learned over my 15 years at Bain Capital were valuable in helping me turn around the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. They also helped me as governor of Massachusetts to turn a budget deficit into a surplus and reduce our unemployment rate to 4.7 percent," Romney writes in the editorial published online late Thursday. "The lessons from that time would help me as president to fix our economy, create jobs and get things done in Washington."

It's a message Romney and his aides have communicated previously on the campaign trail. But it still hasn't quite resonated with voters, amid withering attacks from President Barack Obama's re-election campaign and its allies over Romney's business record.

In the Journal op-ed, Romney argues that his experience at Bain confirmed his "belief in empowering people" and gave him an up close look at how thing like high energy costs and massive regulations impact businesses. Echoing a story that has already been the subject of a Romney campaign ad, the presumptive Republican nominee cites Bain's role in building up an Indiana-based Steel Dynamics by equipping it with new technology.

He says the experience taught him "that we must have a level playing field in international trade." "As president, I will challenge unfair trade practices that are harming American workers," Romney writes.

Among other things, Romney says his time at Bain offered leadership lessons that will help him to take steps to reduce the federal deficit. He also argues that he knows first hand what it's like to start and operate a business?a sly dig at Obama, whom he's frequently criticized for lacking private sector experience and for being hostile to businesses.

"I'm not sure Bain Capital could have grown or turned around some of the companies we invested in had we faced today's anti-business environment," Romney writes.

"I know what it takes to turn around difficult situations," he adds. "And I will put that experience to work, to get our economy back on track, create jobs, strengthen the middle class and lay the groundwork for America's increased competitiveness in the world."

Shelbie Kirkendoll of Kearney is the only high school student from the Greater Kansas City region to win a top prize at the big National SkillsUSA Championships. And our Fox 4 Young Achiever of the Week is also a champion of volunteerism and philanthropy with a heart of gold.

Warmth. Concern. Empathy. Caring. Her supervisors at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cameron say it?s all deeply genuine in Shelbie Kirkendoll as she interacts with the residents. Fresh off her senior year at Kearney High School in nearby Kearney, Mo., Shelbie?s a recreational therapy aide here, working with veterans with Alzheimer?s, dementia and other special needs conditions, the center?s most challenging population.

?I absolutely love it,? says Shelbie about working with the residents. ?It?s just so fulfilling being around these veterans. They fulfill my life.? Her boss here says Shelbie has uncommon skill and maturity for one still so young.

?She?s just so compassionate and caring,? says Administrator Bradley Haggard. ?And you can just see that when she touches a vet?s hand or shoulder. And she just has that maturity level that she knows, ?This is what I want to do, I want to care for people.?? Shelbie?s going into nursing and says she?d like nothing better than to be a hospice nurse one day soon.

?My grandpa was in hospice before he passed away,? says Shelbie about what sparked her interest in hospice. ?And I want to be able to help people at the lowest time of their life. And the family. It?s a really, really crucial time of their life. And I really want to make a difference at that time.?

Shelbie has an impressive start on her life goal. She?s already a Certified Nursing Assistant and a Licensed Pharmacy Technician. And she soared through health care courses at Excelsior Springs Area Career Center where she was Student of the Year.

?Right away I knew she was a leader,? says Brian Smarker, an instructor at Excelsior Springs Area Career Center who got to know Shelbie as she became president of the school?s Skills USA chapter. ?And she expresses it joyfully. She?s very exuberant. Very outgoing. Very professional in everything she does.?

Shelbie struck gold this summer at the National SkillsUSA Championships competition for the country?s top career and technical students. She won in the Health Occupations Professional Portfolio competition, crafting a superb compilation of her career preparation and personal activities and accomplishments and then dazzling the judges with a terrific oral presentation.

?It?s about selling yourself,? says Shelbie of the importance of putting together a great portfolio. ?As an employee, prospectively, you are selling yourself to an employer.?

All of her stellar accomplishments and honors mean a lot to Shelbie but there?s something else that?s very big in her life that means just as much. She has been a dedicated, seemingly tireless volunteer and philanthropist for years, much of it for health care organizations.

She started volunteering nearly six years ago for charity projects sponsored by a the Target store in Liberty, Mo. where her mom is a manager. She volunteers at Liberty Hospital in the cancer center and at Continua Hospice.

A talented softball player herself, Shelbie almost single-handedly put on a benefit softball game that raised $1,500 for the American Cancer Society. The project made her a Missouri State Finalist for the Prudential Spirit of Community Award, one of the world?s top honors for community service and philanthropy by young people.

?I really just want to make people happy,? says Shelbie. And she?s?succeeding at it gloriously.

Shelbie is starting nursing classes at Missouri Western State University next week with enough college credit hours she racked up in high school and at the career center to be a sophomore.

Oil prices up as traders foresee tighter supplies

BANGKOK (AP) ? Oil prices rose Wednesday as analysts predicted a strain on supplies and Middle East tensions would support crude prices.

Benchmark crude for October delivery rose 3 cents at late afternoon Bangkok time to $96.87 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract finished 71 cents higher at $96.68 in New York on Tuesday.

Traders also awaited the release of minutes from the Federal Reserve's previous policy meeting for signs that it might lower interest rates. Lower rates tend to drive oil prices because they steer investors away from less-risky investments.

Analysts at Goldman Sachs, meanwhile, said tightening supplies and oil-producing Iran's standoff with the West over its nuclear program were factors to be considered in the direction of oil prices.

"In our view, it is only a matter of time before inventories and OPEC spare capacity become effectively exhausted, requiring higher oil prices to restrain demand, keeping it in line with available supply. Further, as tensions between Iran and the West escalate, the risk to crude oil prices is becoming increasingly skewed to the upside," the analysts said in an email commentary.

Brent crude, which is used to price international varieties of oil, fell 35 cents to $114.29 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other futures trading on the Nymex, heating oil was down 0.3 cents to $3.128 a gallon. Natural gas was 3 cents higher $2.809 per 1,000 cubic feet.

How Different Exercises Can Improve Your Health

Most people know that regular exercise plays a critical role in sustaining and improving personal health. However, people often just hear advice about getting more exercise without knowing what they should do and how exactly it can help solve their health issues. This is not good at motivating people to start exercising and continue to exercise.

There are actually several different types of exercise that everyone should include in some amount in their exercise regimen. Each has a specific impact on physical and mental health.

Strength Building Exercises

Aerobic exercises used to be all the rage. They are still very important parts of any exercise regimen, however, researchers have determined that it is actually strength building exercises, such as old-fashioned weightlifting, that burn more calories and promote health more effectively. This has brought about a transition in exercise circles as people now try to balance their workouts with strength and resistance training.

Examples of strength building include the already-mentioned weightlifting exercises. However, they also include innovative approaches that use resistance to mimic weight. A lot of home gym equipment uses resistance to help buyers build strong muscles rather than riskier free weights, which are heavier, costlier and sometimes cause injury.

Many isometric exercises are also effective at strength building. Pushups and pull-ups are good examples. For an all-around experience, try squat thrusts to build strength in numerous muscles and get your pulse racing.

Aerobic Exercises

Also known as cardio workouts in some circles, these sorts of exercises are meant to put certain muscles to the test, such as those in your legs. Most important, however, is the heart muscle. High intensity workouts that involve a lot of movement rather than weights get your heart pumping fast. Doctors recommend that all people experience some sort of vigorous exercise a few times a week in order to exercise the heart and strengthen the entire cardiovascular system. This is a good way to fend off cardiovascular disease and improve your longevity.

Examples of useful exercises that bring about this temporary cardio strain are running, bicycling, swimming and aerobic dance. You can also perform these exercises indoors on treadmills or ellipticals. The exact form of exercise does not matter as much as the duration and the intensity. As long as you are getting your heart racing for periods of more than 20 minutes as much as three times a week, you are providing excellent exercise for your heart and blood vessels.

Mobility Exercises

Many people begin an exercise regimen and think of stretching as something to simply get out of the way. In fact, stretching is just as important as the rest of the exercises that you will do in a workout. Increasingly, experts suggest that just as much time be devoted to targeted and efficient forms of stretching prior to and after a workout. Good stretches increase the mobility of your joints, strengthen them and protect them. In the end, these types of exercises also protect you because they prevent you from getting hurt or damaging your joints, making it difficult if not impossible to continue exercising.

There are psychological benefits to all forms of exercise as well. When encouraged to exercise, most people who have previously suffered from depression or mood disorder s report an improvement in their outlook. Whatever you choose to do to workout, make sure you do it! The vast benefits of exercise are too great to be ignored.

Distant tropical threat on GOP convention radar

MIAMI (AP) ? Forecasters are keeping a wary eye on a tropical depression in the Atlantic Ocean that poses a potential threat to Florida during next week's Republican National Convention in Tampa.

National Hurricane Center computer models Tuesday predicted the depression would grow into a hurricane over the next few days. Some models had the storm striking Florida or passing close after moving across Cuba as early as Sunday.

Forecasters caution that long-range storm track predictions can be off by hundreds of miles. A hurricane hunter plane was scheduled to investigate the system Tuesday.

Thousands of Republicans will gather in Tampa next week to nominate Mitt Romney for president and Paul Ryan for vice president. GOP and Tampa officials say they have contingency plans in case a storm blows through.

WORLD NEWS TOMORROW ? ICF International (NASDAQ:ICFI), a leading provider of consulting services and technology solutions to government and commercial clients, has been awarded a multiple-award re-compete contract by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to provide technical and outreach support services for the Climate Change Division (CCD). The contract has a ceiling of $23.5 million for all task orders awarded to ICF and a term of five years.

Under this contract, ICF will support EPA?s CCD across a range of activities, including analysis and development of climate change science, economics, technology and policy; development of and capacity building for greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories; and outreach, communications, education, and logistical support.

?Over the next five years, EPA?s programs will continue to shoulder heavy responsibilities of national and global significance as the agency works to further reduce GHG emissions and take actions that help communities and ecosystems become more resilient to the effects of climate change. ICF has amassed the multidisciplinary capabilities needed to support CCD across its programs worldwide. As U.S. and non-U.S. climate policies evolve under the Clean Air Act, GHG Reporting Program, New Source Performance Standards, and other initiatives, ICF has the unique capability to support CCD in every dimension,? said Randy Freed, senior vice president for ICF International.

From the very beginning of EPA?s climate change work, ICF has played an integral role in developing and implementing its programs, starting with development of the U.S. GHG inventory that is submitted annually to the United Nations Framework on Climate Change.
