(AP) ? Authorities say a man is dead and a husband and wife were seriously injured when a small plane crashed into a Long Island neighborhood.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen says the Socata TB10 carrying three people went down in Shirley around noon Sunday, shortly after taking off from Brookhaven Calabro Airport.

Police identified the injured as 61-year-old Erik Unhjem and 60-year-old Jane Unhjem, both of Goshen, N.Y. They were listed in serious condition with burns at Stony Brook University Medical Center.

Authorities have not yet released the name of the dead man. It's not immediately clear if he was the pilot.

The Socata TB10 ? a model known as the "Tobago" ? is a single-engine propeller plane.

Witnesses say neighbors tried to douse the flames with fire extinguishers and garden hoses.
