'Quadruple helix' DNA in humans

Cambridge University scientists say they have seen four-stranded DNA at work in human cells for the first time.

The famous "molecule of life", which carries our genetic code, is more familiar to us as a double helix.

But researchers tell the journal Nature Chemistry that the "quadruple helix" is also present in our cells, and in ways that might possibly relate to cancer.

They suggest that control of the structures could provide novel ways to fight the disease.

"The existence of these structures may be loaded when the cell has a certain genotype or a certain dysfunctional state," said Prof Shankar Balasubramanian from Cambridge's department of chemistry.

"We need to prove that; but if that is the case, targeting them with synthetic molecules could be an interesting way of selectively targeting those cells that have this dysfunction," he told BBC News.

It will be exactly 60 years ago in February that James Watson and Francis Crick famously burst into the pub next to their Cambridge laboratory to announce the discovery of the "secret of life".

What they had actually done was describe the way in which two long chemical chains wound up around each other to encode the information cells need to build and maintain our bodies.

Today, the pair's modern counterparts in the university city continue to work on DNA's complexities.

Balasubramanian's group has been pursuing a four-stranded version of the molecule that scientists have produced in the test tube now for a number of years.

It is called the G-quadruplex. The "G" refers to guanine, one of the four chemical groups, or "bases", that hold DNA together and which encode our genetic information (the others being adenine, cytosine, and thymine).

The G-quadruplex seems to form in DNA where guanine exists in substantial quantities.

And although ciliates, relatively simple microscopic organisms, have displayed evidence for the incidence of such DNA, the new research is said to be the first to firmly pinpoint the quadruple helix in human cells.

'Funny target'

The team, led by Giulia Biffi, a researcher in Balasubramaninan's lab, produced antibody proteins that were designed specifically to track down and bind to regions of human DNA that were rich in the quadruplex structure. The antibodies were tagged with a fluorescence marker so that the time and place of the structures' emergence in the cell cycle could be noted and imaged.

This revealed the four-stranded DNA arose most frequently during the so-called "s-phase" when a cell copies its DNA just prior to dividing.

Prof Balasubramaninan said that was of key interest in the study of cancers, which were usually driven by genes, or oncogenes, that had mutated to increase DNA replication.

If the G-quadruplex could be implicated in the development of some cancers, it might be possible, he said, to make synthetic molecules that contained the structure and blocked the runaway cell proliferation at the root of tumours.

"We've come a long way in 10 years, from simple ideas to really seeing some substance in the existence and tractability of targeting these funny structures," he told the BBC.

"I'm hoping now that the pharmaceutical companies will bring this on to their radar and we can perhaps take a more serious look at whether quadruplexes are indeed therapeutically viable targets."

A few years ago, Google?s human resources department noticed a problem: A lot of women were leaving the company. Like the majority of Silicon Valley software firms, Google is staffed mostly by men, and executives have long made it a priority to increase the number of female employees. But the fact that women were leaving Google wasn?t just a gender equity problem?it was affecting the bottom line. Unlike in most sectors of the economy, the market for top-notch tech employees is stretched incredibly thin. Google fights for potential workers with Apple, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft, and hordes of startups, so every employee?s departure triggers a costly, time-consuming recruiting process.

Then there was the happiness problem. Google monitors its employees? well-being to a degree that can seem absurd to those who work outside Mountain View. The attrition rate among women suggested there might be something amiss in the company?s happiness machine. And if there?s any sign that joy among Googlers is on the wane, it?s the Google HR department?s mission to figure out why and how to fix it.

Google calls its HR department People Operations, though most people in the firm shorten it to POPS. The group is headed by Laszlo Bock, a trim, soft-spoken 40-year-old who came to Google six years ago. Bock says that when POPS looked into Google?s woman problem, it found it was really a new mother problem: Women who had recently given birth were leaving at twice Google?s average departure rate. At the time, Google offered an industry-standard maternity leave plan. After a woman gave birth, she got 12 weeks of paid time off. For all other new parents in its California offices, but not for its workers outside the state, the company offered seven paid weeks of leave.

So in 2007, Bock changed the plan. New mothers would now get five months off at full pay and full benefits, and they were allowed to split up that time however they wished, including taking some of that time off just before their due date. If she likes, a new mother can take a couple months off after birth, return part time for a while, and then take the balance of her time off when her baby is older. Plus, Google began offering the seven weeks of new-parent leave to all its workers around the world.

Google?s lavish maternity and paternity leave plans probably don?t surprise you. The company?s swank perks?free gourmet food, on-site laundry, Wi-Fi commuting shuttles?are legendary in the corporate world, and they?ve driven a culture of ever-increasing luxuries for tech workers. This week, for the fourth consecutive year, Google was named the best company to work for by Fortune magazine; Microsoft was No. 75, while Apple, Amazon, and Facebook didn?t even make the list.

At times Google?s largesse can sound excessive?noble but wasteful from a bottom-line perspective. In August, for example, Forbes disclosed one previously unannounced Google perk?when an employee dies, the company pays his spouse or domestic partner half of his salary for a decade. Yet it would be a mistake to conclude that Google doles out such perks just to be nice. POPS rigorously monitors a slew of data about how employees respond to benefits, and it rarely throws money away. The five-month maternity leave plan, for instance, was a winner for the company. After it went into place, Google?s attrition rate for new mothers dropped down to the average rate for the rest of the firm. ?A 50 percent reduction?it was enormous!? Bock says. What?s more, happiness?as measured by Googlegeist, a lengthy annual survey of employees?rose as well. Best of all for the company, the new leave policy was cost-effective. Bock says that if you factor in the savings in recruitment costs, granting mothers five months of leave doesn?t cost Google any more money.

The change in maternity leave exemplifies how POPS has helped Google become the country?s best employer. Under Bock, Google?s HR department functions more like a rigorous science lab than the pesky hall monitor most of us picture when we think of HR. At the heart of POPS is a sophisticated employee-data tracking program, an effort to gain empirical certainty about every aspect of Google?s workers? lives?not just the right level of pay and benefits but also such trivial-sounding details as the optimal size and shape of the cafeteria tables and the length of the lunch lines.

In the last couple years, Google has even hired social scientists to study the organization. The scientists?part of a group known as the PiLab, short for People & Innovation Lab?run dozens of experiments on employees in an effort to answer questions about the best way to manage a large firm. How often should you remind people to contribute to their 401(k)s, and what tone should you use? Do successful middle managers have certain skills in common?and can you teach those skills to unsuccessful managers? Or, for that matter, do managers even matter?can you organize a company without them? And say you want to give someone a raise?how should you do it in a way that maximizes his happiness? Should you give him a cash bonus? Stock? A raise? More time off?

Some of Google?s HR lessons won?t apply to other companies. The search company has been insanely profitable for much of its history, and many of its problems are atypical. Google has the luxury of worrying about the best way to give people more money instead of, say, the ideal manner in which to lay them off. Still, a few of POPS? findings?like how to train a better corps of managers and how to improve interviews?will apply to most other firms. And among the tech giants?many of which are also quite profitable and face some of the same problems Google does?the search company is alone in trying to answer its HR questions scientifically. ?We make thousands of people decisions every day?who we should hire, how much we should pay them, who we should promote, who we should let go of,? says Prasad Setty, who heads POPS? ?people analytics? group. ?What we try to do is bring the same level of rigor to people decisions that we do to engineering decisions. Our mission is to have all people decisions be informed by data.?

St. Louis, nation mourns Musial's death

ST. LOUIS (AP) - St. Louis Cardinals reliever Mitchell Boggs was at a party back home in Georgia for his sister's wedding when the gathering suddenly turned somber.

The news had spread that Hall of Famer Stan Musial died on Saturday. He was 92.

"Everybody knew who Stan Musial was," Boggs said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "Everyone knew what a great person he was."

A moment of silence was observed before the start of the Rhode Island-Saint Louis men's basketball game across town, and prior to the third period of the St. Louis Blues' NHL opener against the Detroit Red Wings when public address announcer Tom Calhoun described Musial as "St. Louis' favorite son."

Former Cardinals manager Tony La Russa interrupted his annual Animal Rescue Foundation event onstage to pass on the sad news. The Cardinals set up a memorial around the larger of the two Musial statues, a longtime meeting place for fans, outside Busch Stadium.

"Obviously, everybody is heartbroken," current Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said at the Blues game. "There's a lot of people who will quote his stats to you, but what makes it so touching is how it affects people's lives."

Former Cardinals star Albert Pujols weighed in with a tweet: "My prayers are with the Musial family tonight. I will cherish my friendship with Stan for as long as I live. Rest in Peace."

Current Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday, too: "Sad to hear about Stan the Man, it's an honor to wear the same uniform. Prayers to the Musial family."

Many recalled Musial as the most selfless of sports heroes. Boggs was touched by Musial's enthusiasm when the pitcher cracked the major leagues in 2008.

"He was one of the best players to ever play the game, and he was very happy for me when I made my first team," Boggs said. "He was extremely kind to me. He was one of a kind."

Hall of Fame manager Whitey Herzog said Musial was a player he'd have loved to have written onto his lineup card. He said Musial's influence provided a helpful push in his election to the Hall.

"He was always great to me when I was a nobody," Herzog said. "He will always be Mr. Baseball. You can go around the world and you'll never find a better human being than Stan Musial."

Musial had been in poor health for several years and Herzog remembered a conversation at the funeral of Musial's wife, Lillian, last May in which Musial indicated he was ready for the end of his life.

"I always wanted to live to be 100," Herzog recalled Musial saying, "but I didn't want to live to be 100 like this."

All of Musial's admirers preferred to recall the long-lasting glory days.

"I never got to see him play but I saw what type of person he was and what type of impact he had in this city," Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said. "That made me realize how lucky we were to have him."

Commissioner Bud Selig said baseball lost "one of its true legends," adding that Musial had been a "Hall of Famer in every sense and a man who led a great American life."

"All of Major League Baseball mourns his passing, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, admirers and all the fans of the Cardinals," Selig said.

Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson said: "The mold broke with Stan. There will never be another like him."

"Stan will be remembered in baseball annals as one of the pillars of our game, with his many successes on the diamond, the passion with which he played, and his engaging personality," he said.

Blues Hall of Famer Bernie Federko commented on Musial after broadcasting the hockey team's 6-0 victory over Detroit.

"He never acted like a famous ballplayer, he just acted like a normal guy. He always had time for everyone, and he looked you in the eye," Federko said. "It's a sad day but to go at 92, it's a great life. I lost my dad last year at 92 the same way. If we all signed up for 92 years, we'd be pretty happy about it."

Exodus of inaugural watchers jams D.C. subway stops

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Crowded subway stations and a disabled train caused major headaches Monday for thousands of rail riders trying to get home from President Barack Obama's second inauguration.

Despite handling fewer passengers than in 2009, the District of Columbia's mass transit system decided to temporarily close four stations near the National Mall because of crowding. The problem was exacerbated by a disabled train in northern Virginia that caused extensive delays for passengers trying to get out of city.

Lines around stations snaked for blocks in some cases, as stranded and frustrated passengers congregated outside entrances.

"People were trying to enter the station faster than trains were taking them out," Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said.

The four stations ? Federal Center SW, Metro Center, Foggy Bottom and L'Enfant Plaza ? closed and reopened during the course of Monday afternoon. But transit officials dealt with residual delays caused by the train that broke down, and frustrated passengers lamented how longer-than-expected waits put them at risk of missing their connections out of town.

Barbara Means and Shekita Lee were among a group of people, some of them elderly, who rode a bus from Atlanta to the inauguration. The inbound trip went smoothly, Means said. But after the ceremony, they were forced to wait for more than an hour outside the L'Enfant Plaza station, making them late for their bus's scheduled departure.

At the entrance where Means waited, police officers would occasionally open the doors and allow a few people inside. A crowd of several hundred thinned to dozens shortly before 3 p.m. as people sought different options. Some of those who remained weren't sure where else to go.

"The biggest travesty is we don't have anyone out here providing information and directions," Means said. "We live in Atlanta. This would never happen there. ... This is inexcusable. We don't know what to do, and our bus leaves at 3 o'clock."

Lee said the group was staying in the line because there seemed to be no better option.

"The disappointment is there's no alternative. Nobody seems to know what's going on. We're from out of town," she said.

The problems occurred even though Metro was handling far fewer passengers than during Obama's first swearing-in in January 2009. As of 8 p.m., 719,000 people had entered the subway system, down from just over 1 million at the same point in 2009. The total was consistent with Metro's projections and was roughly the same as the number of people who ride the rail network on a normal business day.

Stessel said the mechanical problem that caused the train to break down was a random occurrence, and that Metro had adequate staff and responded quickly. But it took time to disable the brake lines on a fully loaded 8-car train and move it off the track, he said.

"It just happened at a bad time and a bad place," Stessel said. The resulting delays, he said, were "one of the challenges of operating on what is a two-track railroad."

Stessel said transit officials occasionally close stations to cope with crowding, as they did in August 2011, when a rare earthquake caused a sudden mass exodus from downtown Washington.

"It's something that we're prepared to do, based on crowd conditions, on any day," Stessel said.

Even stations that remained open grappled with major crowding. At Farragut West, crowds lined up to buy fare cards, clogging the entry to the platforms.

Earlier Monday, there were long lines to get out of Federal Center SW, a small station with a single point of entry. More than 100,000 tickets to the ceremony listed that station as the closest one. That went against Metro's advice for passengers to be flexible about which stops to use. Some trains didn't stop there because there wasn't enough room on the platform for more passengers to disembark.

The experience was frustrating to Thia Golson of Alexandria, Va., who had to double back after her train bypassed the station without warning.

"There was no announcement on the train," she said.

(AP) ? Chinese tech giant Huawei on Monday criticized U.S. claims the company might be a security risk as trade protectionism that harms consumers.

The comments came as Huawei Technologies Ltd., a maker of network switching gear and smartphones, disclosed details of its 2012 performance in an effort to show transparency and allay security concerns.

At a news conference, chief financial officer Cathy Meng expressed frustration about U.S. security complaints. She said Americans pay about twice what Europeans do for third- and fourth-generation mobile phone service and suggested it was due to impediments to competition.

"These measures using trade protectionism to interfere with free competition will ultimately harm the benefits of end users and consumers," Meng said. "As we continue to invest in this industry and work with our customers, our customers and markets generally see the value we create for them."

Outside the United States, Huawei has grown rapidly in developing countries and is increasing sales in Europe, becoming the first Chinese firm to break into the top ranks of global technology companies. It is challenging Sweden's Ericsson AB for the status of the biggest network gear supplier.

Last year's profit rose 33 percent over 2011 to 15.4 billion yuan ($2.4 billion) on sales of 220.2 billion yuan ($34.9 billion), according to Meng. Still, last year's profit was less than half 2010's high of 24.7 billion yuan ($3.9 billion).

Huawei is privately held but has released more financial details in recent years in an effort to ease concern about the company.

Monday's news conference was the first of its kind for Huawei and part of an effort to "honor our commitment to transparency," said Meng, a daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei. She did not respond directly to a question about possible plans for further disclosures about things such as how key company decisions are made.

Huawei was set up in 1987 by Ren, a former Chinese military engineer, to sell imported telecoms equipment and later started to develop its own. The company says it is owned by its employees and denies it is controlled by the communist government or China's military, but such concerns have hampered its efforts to expand in the United States.

In October, a U.S. congressional panel recommended phone carriers avoid doing business with it or its smaller Chinese rival, ZTE Corp. Beijing rejected the report as false and an effort to block Chinese companies from the U.S. market.

In Australia, Huawei suffered a setback in 2011 when the government barred it from bidding to work on a national broadband network.

The U.S. and Australian actions highlight concern about Beijing's cyber warfare efforts, a spate of hacking attempts aimed at Western companies and the role of Chinese equipment providers, which are expanding abroad.

Huawei issued a pledge last year not to cooperate with spying.

Its financial rebound came as ZTE warned Sunday it is likely to report a loss for 2012 of 2.5 billion yuan to 2.9 billion yuan ($400 million to 460 million) due to thinner margins on contracts in Africa, South America, China and elsewhere in Asia.

Huawei says it serves 45 of the world's 50 biggest telecoms carriers. The company has 140,000 employees and research and development centers in Europe, Silicon Valley and elsewhere. Meng said R-and-D spending last year rose 26 percent to 29.9 billion yuan ($4.7 billion).

Last year, only one-third of sales came from its home China market, according to Meng. Europe, the Middle East and Africa accounted for 35 percent of sales, while 17 percent of sales were in other Asia-Pacific markets and 15 percent from the Americas.

Meng said Huawei paid 12.5 billion yuan ($1.9 billion) in employee bonuses last year but said some top executives received no bonus because they failed to meet personal performance targets. She gave no other details.

Major carriers need to keep making long-term investments and are forecast to increase spending by about 5 percent this year, Meng said. She said that should help to insulate Huawei from swings in the global economy.

"It's not as if people stop talking on the phone because the economy is weaker," Meng said. "We will not be influenced too much by the economic downturn in our industry."

Last year, as I was teaching a class, I was discussing the idea of communication as requiring some way to send and receive messages (the medium). To illustrate my point, I mentioned the term, ?TV antenna?. One of my students (in her early 20?s) raised her hand and and asked, innocently, ?what?s a TV antenna?? Other members of the class (most of them in their 30?s and 40?s), nearly fell out of their chairs laughing. But, yes, boys and girls, back in the dark ages of growing up in the 70?s, our choices were limited to whatever you could pull off the air with your rooftop antenna or ?rabbit ears?.? For us in the Jackson area, that meant Channels 3, 12, 16 and 29. One day, in the distant science-fiction future, we dreamed, we could have as many channels as we wanted.

Fast forward to 2013. Now, there are so many channels that we don?t know what to do with them all. In fact, there are so many channels that most people can?t ? wouldn?t care to ? possibly watch all of them.

However, as the rates for programming through cable and satellite keep growing, many people are saying ?enough?. For the first time in history, last year saw major indications that people are leaving cable and satellite for ?streaming?, which is receiving TV programming through a service like Netflix or Hulu, using your existing broadband Internet connection. And, as options get better and technology catches up, millions are finding that ?cutting the cord? is the way to slash their entertainment costs while satisfying their hunger for programming. Apple?s iTunes is also offering content through their own AppleTV service.

One increasingly-popular option is Roku, featuring a small box smaller than a sandwich, which allows users to stream movies, sports, TV programs and special content using services like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. In addition, owners of the Nintendo Wii, Microsoft?s X-Box 360 and Sony?s PS3 are finding that their devices come complete with the ability to stream content. Roku has no fees other than purchasing the device, and it provides an easy interface with the subscription channels. There is a lot of free content, but it consists largely of B-movies and video clips.

Recently, we decided to give it a try. We cancelled our DirecTV subscription and signed up for basic Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime trial subscriptions, turned on the Wii (It requires a wireless connection, which we already had), and found that I could log in from the Wii.

For the next several weeks, our family became movie junkies, watching dozens of movies and old TV programs like MacGyver , Miami Vice and Top Gear. Later, I added the Roku (about $80) and invested in a $20 antenna to pull in local channels.

For now, our family is satisfied with the content, but it is changing our viewing habits. I have found that recent episodes of many of the shows we like to watch (including virtually all of CBS? lineup such as NCIS and The Mentalist) are not available for free, although you can watch it free on the computer directly from the CBS website. Some of these shows are available from Amazon Prime for a per-episode charge, but that would perhaps defeat the purpose. (Amazon Prime, by the way, has a $79 annual fee that must be paid up front, and you still won?t get everything for no additional cost afterwards.)

The signal quality is excellent, but that depends on your broadband connection. We found that we can watch two programs simultaneously on the wired computer, and in HD on the Roku in the other room, with excellent picture quality and few interruptions. Some shows make you watch commercials, but the breaks are blissfully short.

The verdict? While we have watched lots and lots of programs, the convenience factor for cable/satellite can?t be overlooked. We are continuing the Netflix and Hulu subscriptions, and watching shows on the computer. And come the next football season, we may have to do something else. At some point, we may switch back totally; however, for now, we are going to stay ?off the cord?. I?d appreciate your opinions on whether you have tried cutting the cord for your own household. Today as part of the Cayman Cookout we're coming at you live poolside at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. Up next: chef Michael Schwartz of Michael's Genuine Food & Drink in Miami and Grand Cayman.

What's the story behind your new beer, Michael's Genuine Home Brew?
The beer came out in late summer 2012. It's a project that we worked on for not that long, but it was sort of a long time coming. Our label Michael's Genuine is kind of fashioned after a beer label, so it was only a matter of time.

We partnered with a brewery in Alabama and brainstormed what it would be, what we wanted it to be. Something food friendly. I'm a beer lover but I'm not a big beer drinker, not big on the super hopped-up beers. We wanted something that had mass appeal but was interesting. So what Florida product could we incorporate? We'd been working with Sem-Chi brown rice, it's a rotating crop for Florida Crystals Sugar, so that popped into my head. But rice is a bad word in the beer world. It's called, what, an adjunct product. White rice is a cheap filler product for something like Budweiser. But brown rice paired with sugar cane is different. So we made a couple test batches and nailed it. So this is our flagship beer and then we'll do a couple seasonal beers.

Sommelier Eric Larkee One thing we talked about was, if you went to a bar on the East Coast before Prohibition and asked for a beer, this is what you would get, a classic American ale. We like things a little hoppier than Chef does, but there's just enough hops in here to make it a little floral. It stands up to food but you can knock back a couple of them in the warm Florida sunshine.

MS: It's on tap at all my restaurants and in other restaurants and bars in South Florida, also some retail shops in 22-ounce bottles.

What's the plan for the dinner you're doing with David Kinch tomorrow night?
I didn't know David Kinch, I just met him yesterday. But he's very well known, he's very good at what he does so we're excited. He's gonna do an amuse bouche of the egg they serve at L'Arp?ge. And two fish courses: Wahoo with passion fruit, and a tuna course with tomato? Or a tomato dish with tuna? We're not sure. Remains to be seen. We're doing some of the reception food passed around, and then for the entree a slow roasted grilled short rib rubbed with coffee and cocoa. [Pastry chef] Hedy [Goldsmith's] doing a dessert extravaganza. Eric paired the wines and we're expecting nothing short of greatness.

How do you pair a wine with passion fruit and wahoo?
EL: We talked about that, about being too matchy matchy, doing a wine with passion fruit like a ripe Sauvignon Blanc. But we decided to go the opposite direction, we decided not to do that.

MS: Are we doing Home Brew?

EL: I mean if people want beer, we'll do Home Brew.

MS: It will be in the kitchen. It will be the beer of choice for the chefs.

Tell us about the guest chefs you've had in Miami.
At Harry's Pizzeria we do a series of every month, a guest chef who comes and takes over the restaurant. It started right after we opened. One chef, close the restaurant, one menu, one seating, 65 people, unlimited wine, one red, one white. Great, great talent: Gabrielle Hamilton, Jonathan Waxman, Marc Vetri, the Animal guys. We kicked it off in January with Paul Kahan. He killed it. We say that after every dinner. Great chefs, though: Chris Hastings, Hugh Acheson, next month is April Bloomfield.

But I don't do it the other way around. I did it with my cookbook tour, but now I'm on the just say no tour. You get caught up in this circuit of events, it's a lot of time, it's a lot of money. They mostly don't pay you. You know, I'm not Tony Bourdain, I'm not Tom Colicchio. For me the best you can do is they cover expenses, but you always incur expenses they don't cover. You have to take your team, and then you have to take them out and they drink a lot. Very expensive group mani/pedis, it costs a lot. So this is the next best thing, the foodies in Miami really dig it. They get to try and experience these chefs without leaving Miami, and for us we get to share ideas and get inspired.

And you've started a program to help your cooks travel elsewhere right?
My chef de cuisine at Michael's attends every one of the pop-up dinners and makes relationships with chefs and their sous chefs. So we started this program where we put on these dinners and we pick a cook who wants to stage somewhere else. So the dinner pays for their trip. It's great, they do 30-35 people, lots of people come. First one wound up at Jonathon Sawyer's in Cleveland, also Sbraga and then Jonathan Waxman.

What's the story with your upcoming restaurants?
We've got two more coming: There's the Raleigh Hotel. It's complicated, we're back on track, it was sold but it's moving forward now so that's exciting.

The Cypress Room is closer, we're building out a new restaurant in the Design District. It'll be a sophisticated American tavern, about the size of Harry's. Crystal chandeliers, tufted banquets, old wallpaper, wood burning grill, open kitchen, rotisserie, very small everything, barrel aged cocktails, classic cocktails. Refined but not pretentious. If there's a tasting menu, it's four courses, not forty.

There will be lots of taxidermied dead animal heads, mounted fish. It'll toe the line between a masculine and feminine vibe, all without white table cloths. But not pretentious. No tweezers but lots of white tailed deer and wild boar on the wall. And lots of cyprus, thus the name.

ETAs on those?
Cyprus Room is early March. Raleigh is a moving target. It took so long for the new buyers to close the transaction, and then renovations, so assessing it'll be a longer process so no timeline.

2013?
We're there and engaged, but when we'll launch that restaurant? Maybe 2014.

Dividend Investing: 4 Great Stocks Offering Over 5% Yields ...

In today's mercurial stock market, investors are rightfully seeking shelter under the faithful wings of dividends. More investors are becoming aware of the power of speculation and are resorting to a more reliable source of income.

Dividend investments may be one of the safest and most effective investment strategies executed. From 1990 to 2010, 43% of the S&P 500's return came from dividends. With dividend stocks, not only can investors receive a steady stream of income every quarter, but they can also experience capital appreciation from the share price.

When I think of companies to consider for dividend investing, I imagine companies that hold serious stature in their industries and pay dividend yields over 5%. All of these companies that I have a chosen follow a strict criteria that I have set. One, the company had to have a strong dividend and a history of consistently paying that high dividend to its shareholders. Two, not only did these companies have to pay high dividend yields, but also have a history of increasing dividends every few quarters. This increases the likelihood of a dividend increase occurring while you hold the stock. Three, I wanted to choose companies that have been around for at least 15 years. This shows that the company isn't pushing high dividends just to attract investors. Lastly, I wanted companies that had a planned strategy on growth and expansion, and a good piece of market share. Let's take a look at some companies that follow my criteria for making a great dividend investment in your portfolio.

Kinder Morgan (KMP)

The first dividend stock on the list is Kinder Morgan Energy Partners. I have chosen this particular stock because it meets all of my requirements that I look for in a dividend investment, and more. There are two huge advantages of owning shares of KMP: The company offers a reliable high-yield dividend that has consistently paid its shareholders, and the share price of this company has significant forecasted growth. Currently, KMP offers a dividend yield of 5.7% (5.04) and is currently trading at $88.42. From 11/12/1992 to 11/14/2012, this company has consistently paid a dividend each quarter, while increasing the dividend every few quarters. During the recent conference call management said, "All five of our business segments at KMP recorded higher results than in the prior year, and segment earnings before DD&A and certain items increased by 20% in 2012 to almost $4.4 billion."

The growth of this company is massive. KMP has invested over $25 billion in expansions, new build projects, joint ventures and acquisitions since 1997 to grow the company. If you're looking for a sure thing, this may be as close as it gets.

For the small investor, this dividend investment is no good. Fewer shares of stock equal smaller dividend payments, therefore this stock is better for investors with enough equity to purchase a couple thousand shares. If you are a smaller investor and would like exposure to this business, consider KMI. It currently trades at $37.19 and holds a yield of 3.87% (1.44).

Tal International Group (TAL)

TAL International Group made the list of my top picks because it's one of the world's oldest and largest intermodal container leasing companies with a 12% market share, and it has a lower valuation than relevant companies in the industry. Also, TAL has a limited risk of sustained excess container capacity due to a short buying cycle and its strong asset residual values provide downside protection. As you can see below, TAL has extremely less volatility in comparison with other shipping lines and consistently higher returns in comparison with other transportation leasing companies.

TAL offers a dividend yield of 6.17% (2.48) and is currently trading near its 52-week high of $40.56. This stock is up 19% this year and has a P/E ratio of 10.4x. TAL has a very strong history of paying substantial dividends to its shareholders. TAL generated $198.2 million in adjusted pre-tax incomes, a 90% increase compared with the prior year. To add the icing, it pays more than half of its income to its shareholders with a current dividend payout ratio of 0.60. Both Bank of America and Merrill Lynch upgraded TAL from a hold to a buy because of its promising future.

AstraZeneca PLC (AZN)

AstraZeneca PLC is a biopharmaceutical business that operates in 69 countries. The primary focus is the discovery, development and commercialization of prescription medicines for six important areas of healthcare: Cardiovascular, Gastrointestinal, Infection, Neuroscience, Oncology, and Respiratory & Inflammation. AZN currently operates in over 100 countries. I chose this stock because it met all of my criteria, and also because of the market demand in the next coming years. Not only do I believe that this stock will consistently pay you increasing dividends, but I also believe that because of the growth and demand of the biopharmaceutical industry, you will also experience a significant increase in share price.

AZN has a dividend yield of 5.80% (2.85) and is currently trading near its 52-week high with a share price of $48.97. AZN holds an attractive P/E ratio of 9.9x with a market cap of $60.5 billion. Over the last five years, AstraZeneca has consistently increased its dividend. Also, in the years 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011, shareholders were rewarded with stock repurchases. Due to the demand, growth, stature and dividends present in this stock, I think it can be a tremendously profitable asset to your portfolio.

Annaly Capital Management (NLY)

Annaly Capital Management is the largest mortgage REIT listed on the NYSE and my favorite dividend stock. With a current dividend yield of 12.22% (1.80) and share price of $14.77, this stock is perfect for a smaller investor searching for dividend income. We were told to be wary of stocks with high-dividend yields because it's usually an indication of distress, but Annaly has a long track record of delivering its dividends in a consistent manner. Since Annaly's IPO in 1997, it has paid over $9 billion in dividends to shareholders. This stock usually floats around the $14-$16 price region, so it doesn't offer much opportunity for substantial profits or losses, but this isn't a bad thing. For dividend investments, I prefer lower amounts of volatility. Below, I've placed a chart illustrating the prior dividend payments.

Dividend investment strategies can prove to be a lucrative tool to increasing profits in your portfolio. A well-diversified dividend portfolio offering high yields will most likely outperform other investment strategies that are susceptible to the mood of the market. Invest in high-quality companies that have an established dividend-paying rapport and low volatility, and I assure you that you will find yourself closer to your investment goals.
