Britain is Alive with Pride

Britain is Alive with Pride

The phrase above is the slogan that Visit Britain us using as part of its advertising campaign to encourage Americans to come and see us. The slogan thought up by Californian, Jay Masunaga, in a competition designed to publicise Britain as a holiday destination for the gay community.
To complement the promotion, Visit Britain has also come up with categories of people to whom Britain would appeal. These are Foodies, Night Owls, Event-Goers, Culturati, Chillers and Fashionistas. You can guess what most of these are but how about Chillers

How 2 b a Totes Hip Gran ? AARP

Posted on 09/14/2012 by Amy Goyer | Multigenerational & Family Issues | Comments

Entertainment | Home & Family | Relationships | Your Life Print

We?re wrapping up Grandparents Week with a look at how to be a hip (dare I say ?cool??) grandparent. This seemed appropriate because National Grandparents Day (the first Sunday after Labor Day) was created largely because of one amazingly hip grandmother, Marian McQuade of West Virginia. She wasn?t a sit-on-your-hands grandma. She advocated for recognizing the significant contributions of grandparents all the way to Washington, D.C. In 1978,Congress passed legislation and President Jimmy Carter signed a presidential proclamation designating the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. You rock, Marian.

Times have changed since then, and so have grandchildren. So how can grandparents stay hip in a changing world? Here are my tips:

  • Be able to sing all the words to ?Call Me Maybe.? The teen pop song, recorded by Carly Rae Jepson, is indeed a catchy tune. But what has really given it legs are the many lip dub videos that everyone from Katy Perry to the U.S. Olympic swim team to Cookie Monster have created in response to Jepson?s music video. Make your own version and your grandkids will be impressed. To inspire you, here?s our AARP ?grand? version?? it makes me grin every time I watch it! You?ll love it too.
  • Yes, Grandma, it IS about the kind of phone you have.? If you don?t have a smartphone, you run the risk of never quite reaching the level of hip-dom your grandchildren will respect. Kids these days know their phones and many are partial to one brand or another. Get with it and get your grandkids to teach you how to use it!

Translation: if you can?t text and use smiley faces appropriately, your grandkids may never communicate with you. How?s that for motivation?!

  • It?s all about the abbrevs.?Abbrev is, well, an abbreviation for the word abbreviation. Get it? From tweens to young adults, many use abbrevs so frequently you?d think it was another language. Totes amaze (i.e. it?s totally amazing.) Be aware that abbrevs are not the same as text acronyms so use appropriately or you?ll be relegated to the non-hip grandparents category. Also, don?t overuse ? more than two per sentence is seer awk.

? ?Here are some of my fave abbrevs:

    • Totes = totally
    • Jeals = jealous
    • Uzhe = usual
    • Ledge = legend
    • Plezh = pleasure
    • Brill = brilliant
    • Seer = seriously
    • Besties = best friends
    • Abs = absolutely
    • Sitch = situation
    • Trubs = trouble
    • Probs = probably
    • Awk = awkward
    • Offish = official
    • Bellig = belligerent
    • Whatevs = whatever
    • Gran = grandmother or grandfather
  • Learn how to dance The Dougie ? OK, just to be clear, we are not advocating the lyrics to the Cali Swag song ?Teach Me How to Dougie,? but let?s face it: pretty much every kid these days knows how to dance The Dougie ? or a version of it. Everybody?s doing it. Even FLOTUS Michelle Obama has been doing the Dougie, so I bet the First Grandma, Marian Robinson, knows how to Dougie! Basically, make like you?re smoothing your hair back, sway side to side ? it?s hard to describe. Get your grandkids to show you how to do it.

? ?But never, ever? do it in front of their friends. Keep it in the fam gran.

  • Know if you?re on Team Peeta or Team Gale??? So, vampires are passe. It?s all about dystopia and archery now. Read The Hunger Games?trilogy and you?ll know what we mean. And if your granddaughter starts naming dolls Katniss, you?ll know why.

What did I miss? Tell me yours in the comments section below!

Something we should stop having done

A news story from London's National Gallery illustrates the trouble with something people say every day.

Fireworks explode over the Olympic Stadium during the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympic Games September 9.

This column is coming to you live (well, almost) from a London still flush with an Olympic afterglow. The shade of the moment is Paralympic pink; and images of triumphant special athletes, beaming with their medals, are everywhere, splashed across the front pages of newspapers and video screens of whatever size, including the truly enormous ones in places such as Trafalgar Square.

It seems to have been the biggest national outpouring of emotion since the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, 15 years ago; only this time, people have noticed, the emotions are rather happier.

The "Agenda" page in the magazine of The Independent on Sunday shared, under the heading "Lexpionage," this little coinage: "Parasoul, n. An umbrella feeling, extending across the country, encompassing a warm glow that comes from seeing Team GB continue to trounce the rest of the world on the athletics field, in the velodrome, etc etc."

The Games haven't been the only story in London, though, and paging through the papers the other day I spotted an item in The Sunday Times that began: "An oil painting by Albrecht D?rer bought for ?10 million by the National Gallery has had serious doubts cast on its authenticity."

Dear Reader, I try to be careful about how many pet peeves I let myself adopt, but I want your support on this one: The idiom "to have something done" does not serve us ? or D?rer ? well in this instance.

It works perfectly well when we say, "I'm having my hair cut tomorrow," or "They're having their bathroom remodeled." As in a passive-voice construction ("the hair is being cut"), the hairdresser or the contractor is unknown. The one doing the arranging, the "having done," is in charge. So there's a certain alignment between the grammatical subject ("I" or "they") and the logical subject.

Our painting, though, is the logical subject of the sentence but struggles to be its grammatical subject. A painting can't "have its authenticity questioned" in the same way I can have my hair cut. It's just a painting, after all; it can't call up art experts to have them come over for a look.

The geology of the art world is less stable than you might imagine. When I visited the National Gallery myself the other day, our guide was surprised to see a new label on a picture long thought to be a Titian self-portrait, inspired by a famous Rembrandt self-portrait. Both featured self-confident 30-somethings with quilted sleeves, in three-quarter poses. But the Titian is now thought to be a portrait of someone else.

But back to grammar. A passive construction would get around the problem sentence in the Times: "Serious doubts have been cast on the authenticity of an oil painting hitherto thought to be by Albrecht D?rer...." Passive voice drives many editors around the bend, but there's a place for it, and this is as good an example as any. This recasting also puts "serious doubts" at the beginning, following good newspaper style in leading with what's most important.

The "to have something done" idiom also shows up ? awkwardly ? in the way people so often talk about property crime: "They had their house broken into while they were on vacation." Unless we're suggesting that "they" are colluding in an insurance scam, there's something not quite right about this sentence. Do you see what I mean?

If I could root this and similar usages out of the English language, I might turn Olympic pink with happiness.

Rotten egg smell: Is Salton Sea source of California's big stink?

Rotten egg smell: A sulfurous stench hit southern California residents Monday. The Salton Sea, a saltwater lake 150 miles southeast of Los Angeles, may be the source of the rotten egg smell.

By Gillian Flaccus,?Associated Press / September 11, 2012

A fallen tree supports numerous heron nests in the mud of Southern California's Salton Sea. As public officials sought a solid answer for what made Monday, Sept. 10, 2012 so pungent in Southern California, one answer proposed was a weather-aided waft of a fish die-off from the Salton Sea.

Noses across Southern California were hoping for a sweeter-smelling Tuesday as public officials sought a solid answer for what made Monday so pungent.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

One answer appeared far more likely than any other: The weather-aided waft of a fish die-off from the Salton?Sea.

But even as officials said several factors indicate the Salton?Sea as the source of the sulfurous smell, air quality investigators stopped short of declaring with certainty that the saltwater lake 150 miles southeast of Los Angeles was the cause.

Barry Wallerstein, executive officer of the South Coast Air Quality Management District, said in a statement late Monday that "there is not yet any definitive evidence to pinpoint the Salton?Sea or any other source yet."

RECOMMENDED: Are you scientifically literate? Take the quiz

One reason for doubt, the statement said, is that "it is highly unusual for odors to remain strong up to 150 miles from their source."

The smell was reported as far away as Palmdale and Lancaster, more than 150 miles north of the Salton?Sea. The dying sea had a fish die-off within the past week and that, combined with strong storms in the area Sunday, could have churned up the water and unleashed bacteria from the sea floor that caused the stench, said Janis Dawson of the Salton?Sea Authority.

The massive thunderstorm complex brought wind gusts up to 60 mph and widespread dust storms. Mark Moede, a National Weather Service meteorologist in San Diego, called it "huge, one of the largest that any of us have ever seen in probably 10 years."

A strengthening onshore breeze Tuesday may dissipate lingering odors closer to the coast, the South Coast air quality district said.

That would be a relief to residents from Riverside County to the San Fernando Valley north of Los Angeles, who lit up switchboards and social media to make a stink of the stink. The district was flooded with more than 200 complaints Monday from across much of its 10,000 square miles.

"The odor was extremely intense," Dawson said. "We actually thought that somebody had an accident, a broken sewage main."

Jack Crayon, an environmental scientist at California's Department of Fish and Game, said he recognized the smell as the typical odor when winds churn up the sea's waters and pull gases from the decomposition of fish or other organisms up to the surface.

He said the phenomenon typically occurs a few times a year in the area surrounding the lake, but it was unusual for the smell to spread so far.

Fish die-offs at the Salton?Sea result from low oxygen levels in the water and receding shorelines. The shrinking lake, which is a major resting stop for migrating birds on the Pacific Flyway, has been plagued by increasing salinity. It was created in 1905 when floodwaters broke through a Colorado River irrigation canal and is fed by water that seeps down from nearby farms. It is about one-third saltier than the ocean and sits 200 feet below sea level.

Julie Hutchinson, battalion chief at California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection in Riverside, said cloud cover lingering over the area has trapped the smell in the suburbs east of Los Angeles.

"It's just not able to evaporate up into the atmosphere," Hutchinson said. "The moisture and thick heavy air is keeping it in the lower ends of the valleys."

In San Fernando, comedian Jose Chavez said he was leaving the grocery store when he was overwhelmed by the odor.

"My first thought was that maybe one of the eggs I bought was rotted, and I got back home and the smell was still there, so then I started to think it was me so I changed my clothes," the 28-year-old said. "It was very pungent."

It also was strong enough to drive him to Twitter, where he quipped: "The Valley is starting to smell like rotten eggs. In an unrelated note, Febreeze sales are through the roof."

French ex-PM Villepin questioned in scam probe

PARIS (Reuters) - Former French prime minister and one-time presidential hopeful Dominique de Villepin was taken into police custody on Tuesday for questioning by magistrates investigating a suspected financial scam involving a luxury hotel network.

Villepin, prime minister in 2005-2007 under then president Jacques Chirac, was questioned about his ties to a man suspected of financial fraud and was released after seven hours, a police spokesman said.

The 58-year-old, best known internationally for announcing Chirac's refusal to join a war against Saddam Hussein's Iraq in an impassioned speech at the United Nations in 2003, denied any wrongdoing in the affair that surfaced publicly last December.

"I was able to restate calmly and simply in what is standard procedure that I'm in no way implicated in the sorry affair that involves one of my friends," Villepin said in a statement.

Magistrates are investigating whether a friend and political backer of Villepin siphoned off large sums of money when he was in charge of an association of luxury hotels called Relais & Chateaux.

Villepin was dragged into the probe after police phone taps exposed links between him and the man at the center of the probe, Regis Bulot, president of the Relais & Chateaux network until 2006 and a member of a Villepin support club.

The affair first emerged publicly in Le Monde newspaper late last year when Villepin was on the verge of entering May's presidential election race, a move he ultimately abandoned.

Le Monde said at the time it had access to phone tap records that raised police suspicion about possible attempts by Villepin to influence judicial inquiries into Bulot.

Villepin never held elected office but played a key role in French government for more than a decade, first as Chirac's chief-of-staff, then successively as foreign minister, interior minister and prime minister.

A prolific writer who has a legal firm of his own, Villepin has gone from one judicial imbroglio to another since his time as prime minister ended and his presidential ambitions started to take shape.

A year ago, an appeals court cleared him of charges he took part in a smear campaign against arch-foe Nicolas Sarkozy, who replaced Chirac as president and was unseated himself last May by Socialist Francois Hollande.

Montrose has a new bear in town

The neighborhood was unfamiliar and the local roads confusing.

So like any wise traveler, the 300-pound black bear that sauntered through Montrose on Sunday morning headed for the freeway, prompting the California Highway Patrol to stop traffic on the 210 in both directions.

The bear strolled through several residential yards, caused a brief panic at a soccer game at Crescenta Valley High School and engaged in a short staring contest with a woman reading the paper on her porch. A sheriff's helicopter took to the skies as deputies and wardens from the state's Department of Fish and Game combed the streets.

Recently, bear sightings have become so common in the area that some residents have begun to associate the sound of helicopters with the animals.

"They send one helicopter for traffic accidents," said Pat Riner-Constantino. "They send three for bears."

Authorities said the bear was probably hungry. California's black bear population is peaking and their food supply dries up in late summer, said Kevin Brennan, a Fish and Game spokesman.

But this bear seemed easily sidetracked, loitering in front of a nail salon and even taking a lap around the track at the high school as soccer players and spectators fled.

"It looked like one of those movies where everyone just up and runs," said Lt. Brian Fitch with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

No one was injured, and there were no reports of damaged property beyond toppled fences. In a picture posted on a sheriff's deputy's Twitter account Sunday morning, the bear is strolling down the sidewalk.

But all that walking made it thirsty. California Highway Patrol logs say the bear stopped to drink from a lawn sprinkler.

The visit upended the usually tranquil Sunday morning routine of the Foothill community. Montrose Avenue was choked with traffic redirected from the closed freeway, and for Bill Mulvoy, an usher at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, that was the first sign that something was amiss.

"We don't ever get much traffic up here on a Sunday. It's a quiet neighborhood," Mulvoy said.

He paused, then added: "Except for the bears."

Bear sightings are a fact of life in the communities bordering the Angeles National Forest, but this summer, increased coverage of the ursine incursions has set communities abuzz.

A well-known bear nicknamed Meatball was captured last April in a Montrose backyard on live television after several trips into Glendale during trash pickup days. Meatball, who has been caught twice more, is staying in an exotic animal rescue site in San Diego County as officials try to arrange a permanent home. And two weeks ago, a bear was hit by a car on the 210 Freeway and limped his way to a Starbucks, where he was reported to authorities and later euthanized because of his injuries.

Word of the latest bear encroachment began at 7:22 a.m. when the animal was seen trying to climb a fence in a residential yard. Deputies triggered an emergency alert system that warned more than 4,000 residents of the bear's presence.

The animal's appearance on the freeway shut down traffic for about 10 minutes.

Lt. Fitch said the Sheriff's Department has been getting reports of bear sightings nearly every day.

Sunday's bear "had no fear of people whatsoever. Whether this guy is responsible for all of those sightings, we don't know," Fitch said.

A Twitter account created for Meatball, also known as Glen Bearian, has helped raise awareness of the dangers faced by bears that make repeated incursions into human society. If one keeps returning or harms property or people, it risks being euthanized.

Fortunately, the Montrose bear's stroll ended peacefully around 10:30 a.m. The animal was tranquilized at the intersection of Hermosa and Sunset avenues. Officials loaded it into a truck and set off for an undisclosed location deep in the Angeles National Forest.

Some residents have become protective of their furry neighbors. After Sunday morning services at Montrose Community Church, people gathered to discuss the sighting and expressed relief as word spread that the bear was safely returned to the forest.

"That poor little bear had about 15 idiots chasing him," said Idora Knuchell, 82.

Just a few hundred feet away from the spot where the bear was hit by three darts, the tantalizing odors of the weekly Montrose farmers market beckoned.

Introvert? 4 Ways to Blast Through your Resistance to Presenting in ...

If you?re an introvert, you may struggle to speak in public and plan to avoid it whenever you can; getting up in front of a group can seem like an insurmountable hurdle if you tend to avoid the spotlight. Yet you may need or want to present well; you have ideas to share, and it really bothers you that you don?t feel competent at presenting.

If you want to be able to get up and speak but feel as though you?re fighting yourself as it?s happening, it?s worth knowing this (I discovered this concept through Susan Cain?s writing; her book is?Quiet: The Power of Introverts):

Researchers have found that we all have 2 physical systems in our bodies relating to ?stop? and ?go?. The?Behavioural Activation System (BAS), or ?Go? system, gets you going and revs you up. The ?Stop? or Behavioural Inhibition System (BIS) makes you cautious and careful, and is designed to keep you safe in the face of danger in the outside world. ?As an introvert, your ?Stop? system may kick in strongly when you?re trying to do something which scares you. So to over-ride your desire to hesitate or stop, you need to replace it with your BAS, and get activated!

Here are 4 suggestions to get you going on the day. They work just as well if you?re e.g. speaking up in a meeting or being interviewed, you don?t have to be giving a formal presentation.

  1. Physically?get moving. Exercise your body by going for a run or fast walk beforehand; in the venue, privately doing karate chops in the air or star-jumps in the toilet or another room before you speak. In the past, I?ve run up stairs before I present. (I?ve also written about this here?in my article on being a low-energy speaker.)
  2. Get annoyed with yourself. Use frustration or anger with yourself to get you going. You have to be careful how you use this one so you don?t get on a roll, but a bit of self-talk like ?For goodness sake, just get on with it! Get over yourself? has helped clients to spark up and replace a sluggish, hesitant energy
  3. Model?another person. By ?acting as if? you?re someone with a more outgoing energy, you actually ?take action? to behave differently. It?s behaving your way into a new way of being
  4. Humour?can be the fastest way to reframe your thinking about a situation. Think of something that makes you laugh, then go on with a smile on your face. You might say this isn?t easy to do, but try it, you may be surprised

Let me know how you get on if you?d like, by leaving a comment below.

us news today: Recreation and Sports: Running at Night - Tips - Part 2

Running at night to get a little exercise sometimes requires placing yourself out there all alone with just your fragile flesh and bones gradually and slowly moving down the road alongside potentially dangerous rolling metal boxes. To add to this dangerous situation, the rolling metal boxes (motor vehicles) are likely under the control of unpredictable drivers prone to voluntary distraction, unsafe rolling speeds, and just plain absent-mindedness. Unfortunately, this situation is a growing reality that can mean serious consequences for everyone "not" in a metal box; namely those who are now running, walking, bicycling and especially those who choose to go out at night. The threat of physical harm or even death (by vehicle) can be a real cause for concern to many well meaning, yet vulnerable people when the sun goes down. Because of this growing trend, certain cautionary measures need to be considered (or at least mentioned) if you decide to run, walk, or ride a bike after hours.

Common sense should tell you that if one is going to go out at night for any of the above reasons, then your clothes, your movements (including any sudden changes in direction), or shoes need to symbolically "scream out" (to drivers), "Hey look over here; here I am!" For example, if you suddenly want to change your course or direction in relation to where you are (running) at any given time, then try to telegraph your intentions to drivers well in advance of executing the change. Think of it in the same context as that of a driver using a turn signal indicator to let other drivers know their intention to turn well before actually making the turn, in order to avoid any confusion as to your next move. Applying this same principle to runners, means they should avoid surprises and irrational movements such as dodging in and out between parked cars, or deciding to "Jay Run" (like illegal Jaywalking) across the boulevard suddenly and abruptly. These are the kinds of actions that tend to confuse drivers who have little time to react when they are given no warning. So if you do need to change your direction or pattern of running, make sure the driver notices you by your cautiously taking the time to first get their attention and then making sure they know your intention well in advance.

Since running and other activities performed at night present these increased visual challenges (to runners and drivers), certain wardrobe changes may also be in order as well. Here are some suggestions that just make good sense. For starters, always wear bright, white, or luminous clothing capable of reflecting light back at drivers so they will see you easily and clearly. You need to be obvious to them even if it means wearing one of those bright orange or yellow glow-in-the dark vests that city street workers wear. On several different occasions I have seen runners with the "glow" built right in to their sneakers and running attire, making it really easy to see them at night. They are the smart ones.

In addition to making sure that WE are visible and predictable to drivers at night, we should also make sure that drivers and "their" vehicles are visible to "us" as well. Because of our inherent visual limitations at night, we need to rely heavily on our other senses to adequately know what is going on around us in our figurative "blind-spot." Think about some of the scary surprises you have experienced in the past that happened because of a blind-spot in the rear side sections of your car. Runners, pedestrians, and bicyclists too can create a "blind-spot" when they are overly eager, too focused, and enthusiastically "high" as they move on down the road. Due to the limitations of this so called "blind-spot," it is very easy to temporarily lose our awareness of immediate surroundings unless we actively remind ourselves to monitor them continually. Since we do not have eyes in the back of our heads to see the whole picture continuously, we can compensate for this by keeping our ears opened by removing I-PODS, cell phones, head sets, or any other impediment to our "hearing" that blind zone behind us. With this extra set of "eyes" on the sides our head (called ears), we can increase awareness of our surroundings without eyes in the back of our head. Our sense of hearing can actually give us an audible "rough estimate" of things going on behind us when our vision is temporarily occupied in front of us. You should be aware by now, that by having headphones covering your ears when running, you lose this advantage and put yourself at increased risk of harm by passing vehicles. So by all means make the effort to reach your goals, but be mindful of the primary objective to come home healthier, happier, and most of all alive. Be predictable, obvious, and aware of your surroundings (especially at night), and you will be safe and secure to do it all again, the next time.

This is only one of many subjects we discuss on my BLOG "SafeSecureTalk" at http://www.safesecuretalkblog.com/. We also discuss personal Safety and Security Products and solutions such as using Tasers, Pepper Sprays, and Stun Guns to discourage and disarm perpetrators who pose a serious threat to our person and our families. To increase security levels in our homes and businesses we will also be discussing preventative measures such as the use of Surveillance Cameras, Home and Personal Alarms and Spy Gear such as Hidden Cameras.

More grandparents fill caregiver role | hclindia.com

Grandparents, an increasingly important source of child care in the United States, vary greatly in the kind of care they provide, depending on their age, resources, and the needs of their children, research at the University of Chicago shows.

A new UChicago study, based on a National Institute on Aging survey, shows that 60 percent of grandparents provided some care for their grandchildren during a 10-year period, and 70 percent of those who did provided care for two years or more.

The results mirror recent U.S. Census data showing the importance of grandparents in child care. The 2010 Census reported that 8 percent of grandparents live with their grandchildren, and 2.7 million grandparents are responsible for most of their grandchildrens needs. In 2006, 2.4 million grandparents had that responsibility.

Additionally, grandparents are the primary source of child care for 30 percent of mothers who work and have children under the age of five, a Census survey showed. The UChicago study explores the diversity in the kinds of care provided by grandparents.

Our findings show that different groups of grandparents are likely to provide different types of care. Importantly grandparents with less income and less education, or who are from minority groups, are more likely to take on care for their grandchildren, said Linda Waite, the Lucy Flower Professor in Sociology at UChicago and an expert on aging.

The study found that while minority, low-income grandparents were more likely to head households with grandchildren, most grandparents provided some kind of care for their grandchildren.

The research is based on one of the most comprehensive surveys done on grandparenting, the 1998-2008 Health and Retirement Study supported by the National Institute on Aging. The longitudinal study interviewed 13,614 grandparents, aged 50 and older, at two-year intervals over the period to determine their level of care-giving.

The results are published in the paper, Grandparents Providing Care to Grandchildren: A Population-Based Study of Continuity and Change, published in the September issue of the Journal of Family Issues. Waite is an author of the paper.

The paper looks at a variety of forms of grandparent care ? multi-generational households, in which a grandparent lives with a child and grandchildren; and skipped generation households, in which a grandparent heads the household caring for grandchildren without their parents being present.

Among the papers findings are:

African American and Hispanic grandparents are more likely than whites to begin and continue a multi-generation household or start a skipped generation household.

African American grandparents are more likely to start a skipped generation household. Hispanic grandparents are more likely to start a multi-generational household.
Grandparents with more education and better incomes were more likely to provide babysitting, Waite said.
Grandmothers are more likely than grandfathers to provide babysitting. Grandparents who are married are more likely to begin and continue babysitting, however.
Grandparents are less likely to provide care if they have minor children of their own at home.
Grandparents least likely to provide care are older, unmarried and less likely to be working.

The findings have implications for public policy, Waite pointed out, as child welfare agencies are increasingly depending on family members, particularly grandparents, to provide care to children when parents cannot. The Census figures show that 60 percent of the grandparents caring for their grandchildren also are in the labor force.

Day care assistance may be particularly needed by middle-aged grandparents who are juggling multiple role obligations ? as parent, a grandparent and a paid employee, Waite wrote.
###

Waite is co-director of the Center on Aging at NORC at the University of Chicago. Joining her in writing the paper are Ye Lu, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology & Anthropology, Clemson University; Tracey LaPierre, Assistant Professor of Sociology, University of Kansas; and Mary Elizabeth Hughes. Assistant Professor, Population, Family and Reproductive Health, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. <

How To Kill Wasps In The House : Scrapbooking 101

If you do not know anything about how to kill a wasp in the house, you need to read a book about how to kill wasps. In this way you will understand better what to do and how to proceed when you will face this problem. Remember that killing wasps in the house is totally different from killing a wasp outside, because if you will use insecticides, you can harm your family and pets. So, be very careful when you will try to kill the wasp because you can be stung and eventually die. I know a lot of cases in which people did not know how to kill wasps and died because of they were stung. However, these cases are pretty rare, so, if you will do what I will say below, you will kill the wasp in the shortest period of time possible. To begin with, you need to buy the proper equipment, tools and substances. My advice is to ask for the help of an expert because he will recommend you what to wear and what kinds of substances to use in order to kill the wasps. However, if you want to find out more details about how to kill wasps, all you have to do is to ask for the help of an expert.

Researchers sequence genome of malaria-causing parasite

Friday, September 7, 2012

Scientists at Case Western Reserve University and the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute have discovered that the parasite that causes the most common form of malaria share the same genetic variations ? even when the organisms are separated across continents.

The discovery raises concerns that mutations to resist existing medications could spread worldwide, making global eradication efforts even more difficult.

The researchers, including Cleveland-based David Serre and Peter Zimmerman, Didier Menard (Institut Pasteur-Cambodia) and Arsene Ratsimbasoa (Madagascar National Malaria Control Program) are the first to sequence the genome of the parasite Plasmodium vivax, taken from patients at coverage needed to verify genome-wide DNA sequence variation. The genome contains all of the organism's inheritable information.

The ability to sequence is crucial to understanding the hard-to-study parasite, which annually causes up to 250 million cases of malaria and places an economic burden, mostly on the poor, in excess of $1.4 billion by some estimates.

The researchers report their findings in the Sept. 6 issue of the online journal PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases.

The scientists at first were surprised to find little genetic variation specific to different locations among the samples, which came from humans in Madagascar and Cambodia and South America.

How can parasites, transmitted by mosquitoes, share genome-wide variations on three continents?

"The parasite's life cycle enables P. vivax to be a microbial globe-trotter," said Peter Zimmerman, professor of international health, genetics and biology in the Center for Global Health and Diseases at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

In parts of the world where Plasmodium vivax malaria is endemic, the primary infection gets into the red blood cells and makes people sick, he explained. When they feel better, people resume their normal activities and travel.

But a portion of the infectious form can remain in their liver, where it may lay dormant for months or a year, then re-emerges into the blood when that person is in a different place.

"In that new place, local mosquitoes bite, become infected, and start spreading the P. vivax parasite and its genome in locations that can be a long distance away from where the original human infection occurred," Zimmerman, a senior author of the new study, said.

This ability for worldwide travel raises concerns among the researchers. There is no vaccine and there is only one drug that kills the parasite in the liver.

"If drug resistance arises, with modern travel, how long would it be before the resistance is spread over the world?" Zimmerman said. "This data suggests it could quickly become a big problem."

Learning how Plasmodium vivax lives and causes malaria has been challenging because the parasite dies when removed from its host. With improvements in sequencing techniques and reductions in costs, David Serre, Assistant Professor, at the Genomic Medicine Institute, Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute, and Zimmerman decided to try to see if the parasite's genome could be sequenced and what it might tell.

"Our work provides the first report on genome-wide variation of this malaria parasite and provides the malaria research community with more than 80,000 genetic markers that can now be used for trait mapping or population monitoring," Serre said. "This is a critical step to understand the biology of this parasite that cannot be studied in the laboratory yet affects millions of people each year."

Serre and Ernest R. Chan, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Genomic Medicine Institute, sequenced the genomes of parasites in blood samples taken from two P. vivax malaria patients in Madagascar and three in Cambodia, after first removing the white blood cells. For comparison, they sequenced P. vivax from a monkey that had been infected with a human strain of the parasite found in South America. The results showed the six samples extensively shared alternative forms of the same gene, called alleles.

Sequencing parasite strains straight from humans is a big step forward, Serre said. Most researchers have been studying human strains of P. vivax propagated through monkeys. This method is not as reliable as using human samples, because it introduces variability, and is limited to only about a dozen strains that have been adapted to monkeys. Far more strains have been found in humans.

The 80,000 genetic markers identified can now be used to search for links to drug-resistant malaria, a growing problem in Southeast Asia; and to study possible new treatments for P. vivax malaria.

Zimmerman and Serre are seeking grants to expand their work, sequencing more samples from more locations.

The researchers will use the data to perform genetic evolution studies to learn where the parasite originated, how it spreads, and how different strains are geographically distributed.

The team will also study evolving P. vivax infection mechanisms. For example, in a classic example of natural selection, African persons do not develop P. vivax malaria, but the disease is prevalent in nearby Madagascar. Serre and Zimmerman believe specific mutations in Malagasy P. vivax strains make the parasite able to infect individuals previously thought to be resistant.

"These studies will help advance the understanding of P. vivax biology and how the parasite successfully evades malaria elimination efforts worldwide," Serre said.

With new Kindle Fires coming today, Barnes & Noble preps new Nook Tablet for September launch

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canadian police on Wednesday said the suspect who allegedly shot dead a person outside a victory rally for the separatist Parti Quebecois is the owner of a hunting-outfitting business. A police source confirmed Quebec media reports that Richard Henry Bain, aged 61 or 62, was being held in custody after the Tuesday night shooting, which took place as Quebec's new premier-designate, Pauline Marois, was addressing jubilant supporters. Police said they have no motive for the shooting, and no evidence that the shooter had accomplices. ...

Things You Need To Know AboutCompounding A Structured ...

Home ? All, Structured Settlement Alerts

Compounding Structured Settlements (http://www NULL.freedigitalphotos NULL.net/images/Charts_and_Graphs_g197-Profit_Puzzle_p57281 NULL.html)Younger injured parties (under age50) can often benefit from the use of an inflation-adjusting component in their structured settlement. This means their payouts gradually increase at typically a 3 percent compounding rate. For older injured parties, however, an inflation component is not recommended. The person?s life expectancy does not warrant it.

For example, if a 52-year-old woman were awarded a$1 million annuity settlement, she would receive approximately $4,500 a month for 34 years (her life expectancy). With a 3 percent inflation component, she would receive $2,516 per month the first year, which would increase but not reach $4,500 per month until the 21st year. The $1,984 difference each month over the 21 years adds up to$500,000 tax-free. In most cases, she could probably make better use of the larger monthly amount while she is in her 50s and 60s, or she could decide to invest or save the extra cash she does not use for later in life. By eliminating the inflation factor, she has many more options for her money.

A similar analogy could be made for Social Security payouts. Many people are tempted to postpone collecting their Social Security benefits until they can receive the maximum payout at age 70 instead of collecting at age 66, when you are not restricted by how much you can earn each year. Factoring the income lost over the four years between ages 66 and 70 can be sizable and should not be dismissed.

While younger injured parties often require long-term planning for inflation as well as for education and other milestone expenses, for older clients, attorneys should strive to arrange for a sufficient stream of income to meet the financial needs throughout the life of their client.

(AP) ? Democrats are using one of Barack Obama's strong suits, that voters believe he understands the problems of ordinary people, to trump his weakest suit, the economy.

Michelle Obama played those cards with force in a speech declaring that after four years as president, her husband is still the man who drove a rust-bucket on early dates, rescued a coffee table from the trash and knows the struggles of everyday Americans because he lived them in full.

"I have seen firsthand that being president doesn't change who you are, it reveals who you are," the first lady said to lusty cheers Tuesday night in a deeply personal, yet unmistakably political testimonial highlighting the Democratic National Convention's opening night.

Bill Clinton, the last president to preside over sustained economic growth and a balanced budget, gets the star turn Wednesday night in a speech placing Obama's name into nomination ? a high point in a checkered relationship between two men who sparred, sometimes sharply, in the 2008 primaries, when Clinton was supporting wife Hillary's campaign for the nomination.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, the career venture capitalist, appeared nowhere in Mrs. Obama's remarks. But there was no mistaking the contrast she was drawing when she laid out certain values, "that how hard you work matters more than how much you make, that helping others means more than just getting ahead yourself."

Such subtleties were otherwise missing from the stage as speaker after speaker teed up to take a strip off Romney and the Republicans, answering the catcalls of last week's GOP convention in kind. The party's up-and-coming Julian Castro, mayor of San Antonio, Texas, captured the tone in branding Romney a millionaire "who doesn't get it." Said former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, "If Mitt was Santa Claus, he'd fire the reindeer and outsource the elves."

Polling gives Obama a consistent advantage over Romney as the more empathetic and in-touch leader. But the sputtering economy is the topmost voter concern and Obama's highest mountain to climb after more than 42 months of unemployment surpassing 8 percent, the longest such stretch since the end of World War II. No president since the Great Depression has been re-elected with joblessness so high.

A new report found manufacturing activity declined for a third straight month. The Treasury Department announced Tuesday that the government's debt passed $16 trillion. And the latest unemployment report, coming Friday, offers more potential fodder for Romney's case against his rival's stewardship unless it shows marked improvement. The GOP candidate took a few days' hiatus from the campaign trail, preparing in Vermont for three fall debates with Obama that could prove pivotal in this close election.

Recalling life before Washington, Mrs. Obama spoke of the "guy who'd picked me up for our dates in a car that was so rusted out, I could actually see the pavement going by through a hole in the passenger-side door." She described a marriage of kindred spirits, both from humble roots, and said the president's work on health care, college loans and more all come from that experience. "These issues aren't political" for him, she said. "They're personal."

"Barack knows what it means when a family struggles," she said. "He knows what it means to want something more for your kids and grandkids."

The first lady took the stage as the most popular figure in this year's presidential campaign. Michelle Obama earns higher favorability ratings than her husband, Romney, his wife, Ann, or either candidate for the vice presidency, according to the latest Associated Press-GfK poll. And views of Mrs. Obama tilt favorably among independents and women, two focal points in her husband's campaign for re-election.

Obama watched his wife's address back in Washington, two nights before his own convention-closing speech in the 74,000-seat Bank of America stadium, if uncertain weather permits the outdoor venue. He closed a pre-convention tour of battleground states in Norfolk, Va., dispensing a case of White House-brewed beer at a fire station and summoning a crowd at Norfolk State University to resist apathy and make sure to vote.

Republicans are "counting on you, maybe not to vote for Romney, but they're counting on you to feel discouraged," he said. "And they figure if you don't vote, then big oil will write our energy future, and insurance companies will write our health care plans, and politicians will dictate what a woman can or can't do when it comes to her own health."

Romney-bashing was the order of the night in Charlotte.

"Trust comes from transparency and Mitt Romney comes up short on both," stated Senate leader Harry Reid. The Nevada senator darkly surmised that "we can only imagine what secrets would be revealed" if the wealthy Republican candidate released years of his tax returns. But, notably, Reid dropped his unsubstantiated claim that Romney had avoided years of tax liability.

Democrats roared when the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy was shown mocking Romney in their 1994 Senate race. "On the issue of choice, I am pro-choice, my opponent is multiple choice," the late senator said as cheers grew louder. Romney once supported abortion rights, now opposes them, and has been criticized as a flip-flopper on a number of issues.

Castro, the first Hispanic chosen to deliver a keynote address, recalled Romney's support for mandatory health insurance when he was governor of Massachusetts, and his opposition to that federal mandate in Obama's health care law. "Gov. Romney has undergone an extreme makeover, and it ain't pretty," he said.

In convention floor interviews, delegates said Obama had made a clear difference in their lives over four years.

Wisconsin delegate Kaeleen Ringberg said the president's health care law extended her insurance and student loan aid kept her debt manageable. "I just graduated from college ? I'm 23 ? and I can stay on my parents' health insurance for another three years while I try and make my way in the world," she said. "That has helped me a lot, brought me a lot of security. I might not get a good-paying job for a while, but at least I have my health insurance."
